i seem to feel that his earlier works are in fact romantic and his later works more of contemporary and kinda percussive.
Also his compositions are very state-influenced as the music he wrote at that time has to be approved by the Russian government. But i love his 7th Sonata, and also his 1st and 3rd Piano Concerto.
I am not sure how much oppressed by the Soviet regimen he was.
I always had the impression that he was much more of the in-crowd, than, say, Shostakovitch. I read somewhere that he was considered a”dangerous” man given his close ties with soviet power.
