Bangers

This is a very important post, and if would appreciate any expert advice that anyone can give.

My flatmates and I sometime have fry ups on weekends --  the whole 9 yards.  One crucial point we disagree on is how sausages should be cooked.  I'm not talking about the crapy american stuff -- proper british sausages.

One of my flatmates insist on turning up the fire high, and frying the sausages until they are almost completely charred, setting of the the fire alarm in the process.  Everything done and dusted in under 5 minutes.

I rather like my sausages cooked on a slow fire for a longer period of time, occasionally flipping them to make sure that they are evenly cooked.  The outer covering is slightly brown.

I have to say that I'm not native british and thus seek the advice any anyone who can help.  Which is the correct (traditional) method for cooking sausages?  Is there a better way -- preferbly without setting off the fire alarm or burning the house down.
