Rachmaninov's Piano concerti....
on: December 03, 2006, 12:01:14 AM
Simply: what of Rchmaninov's concerts do you prefer?

And why? motivate, if you please, with technical, estetic, personal references and topic...
For me, in order:

1) The 4° & the 3° (I never was able to decide, maybe - at last - the 3° becouse nearer to me)
2) The 2°
3) The 1°

well??....

P.s. and what do you think of Rachmaninov's sonatas...

I wonder also if some pianists can make to me also some judgements in order to find out what is the best rachmaninov konzert to study (not necesserly to study in his whole structure, but to take exercise on it...), the "easier" and the best usefull... Maybe I have to express myself better...

Um, I'm a bit confuzzled but...

My favorite concerto (and my favorite Rach) is his 2nd.  Although I think that the peak of his output was around the time of his Third concerto, first sonata, and etudes-tableaux.

Seeing how the first Rachmaninoff I ever heard was his first sonata, I'd have to say that I prefer that one to his second.  NO ONE ever listens to - or plays for that matter - his first sonata,  which makes me veery verrry sad.  It's like all of Rachmaninoff's motifs in a 45 minute long masterwork.  Amazing.

And as for why I like his second concerto..... hm.... well, It always stood out to me more than the others, and it represents a great deal to me.  The melodies are so rich, and get stuck in your head worse than cheap boyband music you hear on the radio.

IDK.  Rachmaninoff was king of the piano concerti (of the standard rep, in my humble opinion...)  and the only other concerto that would come close to any of these colossal works would be Prokofiev's 2nd.  Other than that, no others can even come close to the emotional intensity of Rachmaninoff's concerti.

But that of course, is just my opinion.

Haa! Gotcha! Very good. I love the first sonata and I play it as well. I've posted mvts. 1 and 2 here if you like to listen (work in progress)

Currently my favorite concerto is the third and from the other compositions besides the sonata the preludes op. 32,10 and op 32,13
