My piano teacher at my last lesson instructed for my next piece to pick from the following three composers Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven. Immediately without hesitation I blurted Beethoven. She replied with "it's good to know where you stand however you answered that question too quickly, so I think I'm going to assign you this Mozart piece".  

So now I'm working on Mozart's Fantasy in c minor K475 :-P

I would have punched her. I can listen to Mozart, but I find playing his music pretty dull. Beethoven all the way. Like Ed said, he appeals to the heart - he is pure emotional energy.

Beethoven is the better composer.  I think he is the greatest composer of all time.  But this is just an opinion.  Actually I love Mozart as well, but I find his music to be so happy happy all the time.  Beethoven's music is far more profound.

My preference is Mozart (not to downplay Beethoven's genius).  Beethoven's themes are more scales and arpeggios; Mozart writes beautiful melodies.  What's wrong with music sounding happy?  That's why I enjoy Haydn.

why get hung up on beethoven and mozart?!? I mean yes they are great heros of classical music and should be highly respected but this forum makes it seem like they are the only two good composers....anyways i dont believe either one is better then the other, i rank them at the same level, they are both great (but i agree with allchopin.... chopin is better   )

Hard to choose. I always go through ever-changing periods of Beethoven, Mozart and Chopin, and yes, Bach. I can't choose between these four. They are all great to me.

My favorite depends on when you ask me. Right now I am leaving a Chopin period, and going into the Beethoven, Mozart period. Bach next week. Back to Chopin.

When I am in the Chopin period, it's hard for me to hear anyone else, I still want more of Chopin, and think that the piano is by far the greatest instrument. Then I hear a Mozart violin concerto for an hour and get convinced totally differently. I don't understand myself sometimes.

But I have a lot of joy in both the piano and violin, practicing as well as listening, and especially music by these four great composers.

I often can't stand Mozart's music.  It is so superficial, just light happy stuff.  No deep chords or piano-banging.  Beethoven's music makes me cry whenever I listen to it.    I'm not joking!!

I really, really disagree. Indeed, Mozart has written some wonderful melodies, but they all include a scale or two, every single one of them. Beethoven rarely uses them, listen to his most favourite of Sonatas, the Hammerklavier, a hugely memorable allegro, with subsequent beauteous melodies.

Of the two, Beethoven all the way, without disregarding Mozart.

Beethoven, because in my opinion he has everything that music is in his compositions, the extremes of emotion such as in the eroica to the utter sublime in the his variations in the last sonata.

I've never been over-keen on Mozart but I wouldn't agree that his music is all happy-happy-dancing-about all the time, the reason he's not my favourite composer is because I feel that when I listen to his music there is no struggle. By this I mean his composition skill was so easy and natural and it feels (whether it be true or not) that it was all too easy for him to compose, with Beethoven you get the feeling that he sometimes had to go through hell to get what he wanted, plus he went deaf and was an emotional character anyway!

i say beethoven cuz mozart tends to get just slightly redundant at times. he was still a genius though

I like Beethoven and Mozart equally because they both had such interesting lives.  Actually, come to think about it, I cant think of a single composer that didnt have an interesting life.

beethoven's great of course, but why do so much of you dislike mozart's compositions ?
i think i like both ; mozart's pieces are not always "happy happy", just listen to his requiem k 626 (kyrie eleison, lacrimosa, confutatis) ; his symphonies are great too, and not always joyful.

Beethoven couldn't have been great without Mozart. Nevertheless, Beethoven is with little argument the greatest composer ever.

On a side note, while the greater part of Mozart's work is not sturm-und-drunk, he demonstrates many times his ability to write dark, emotional minor-key passages, especially in his Requiem, and his keyboard fantasies, and occasionally in his sonatas. I have however yet to find an seriously dark passage in any of his chamber music.
