Medtner's Piano Concerto No.3
on: December 22, 2006, 12:19:29 AM
Lo all,
I was wondering if someone could advise me on similar Concerto's to this one: Medtner's Third Concerto? I suppose hardly in the technical aspect, but much more so the Structure, Melodies and particularly atmosphere!
I personally say this alot, and almost believe it everytime about every great piece/song I hear: "Wow, I'll never get tired of this one!", usually they are pieces/songs you identify with quite well after one to three listens, except it slowly loses the same level of interest (Basically, you over-listen to it and it gets boring for quite some time).
Except, I had to listen to this Concerto many, many times to finally grasp the entire Concerto's... "story", and whether it is for this reason, that I can listen to it any-time and as many times as I desire, and it will always sound remarkable and un-dull! I don't think I'm exaggurating too much, I can only recall one occasion where I was tired of it.
So, returning to my original point,
any others like it?
I have heard the Concerti by alot of the Romantic Composers, and a number of Classical Era ones... and frankly nothing quite matches this... "Foggy"; when I try to visualise it, yet astonishing piece. I guess by foggy I mean... almost unending piece? Can't explain it!
Thanks for reading, and for any suggestions submitted! For the record, I have heard his First Two Concerti as well, all performed by Mr Geoffrey Tozer.
Extra Note: Tozer's performance of the Sonata-Ballade in F Sharp Major Op.27 is with a similar sort of predicament; it has just occured to me, am I over looking the musical interpretation of the pianist perhaps?

respighi's concerto in modo misolidio has the same sort of atmosphere in it, i think, but the style is a bit more linear, in that the themes progress much smoother. the medtner 3rd concerto really lives up to its nickname, which is "ballade". the medtner 1st concerto is a bit similar to the 3rd. its almost as if the 3rd concerto doesnt have any movments. i mean the outer movements are like 18 min and the second is only 2 min. overall, though, as far as atmospheric concertos go, my pick would be respighi.

Thanks for the suggestion, Jre
More are most certainly welcome!
I'm wondering if I am limiting myself though by specifically requesting Piano Concerto's, perhaps Symphonies can offer something similar? I keep telling myself to grab a CD of Mahlers Symphonies (Just the name of the 'Resurrection Symphony' fascinates me, lol). I have an odd feeling he has created some similar types of pieces?
At any rate, I love the sound of the Grand Piano, perhaps I require that particular instrument? I would assume it's not mandatory, but I know too little...
