what have you been smoking pianowolfi?

Well in answer to your question imo the internet has the curious effect of obscuring the individual at the very same time as exposing them to a potentially limitless audience; Andy Warhol's 15 minutes of fame with impunity, if you like.
The anonmity afforded by the internet removes inhibitions and responsibility for one's actions at the same time, which may explain the candid nature of many of the posts.
For many people it can become a highly confessional tool (look at blogs etc), in the tradition of the diary and the confessional novel; so it fullfills what may be an inherent need to tell the world about oneself.
The online community is unique because it's both tightly meshed yet distant. If someone insults us we can absorb it better because we don't have to face up to them the next day. By the same token we may say things to people online that we'd never consider saying to their face.
This may be a good thing in terms of removing barriers to open expression but it can also come at a personal cost.
Yet it's a microcosm (or macrocosm) of the "real" community, with leaders, outcasts, agenda-setters, bullies, the annoying goody-goody who thinks they know it all, mischeif makers and rebels, sub-cultures and power struggles.
haha, my thoughts. there ya go, you asked for it.
