Teaching my 5 year old
on: February 10, 2004, 06:25:57 AM
I would like to expose Finn to piano.  I started at 5, so I figure he could too.  I want it to be FUN.  Could some of you recommend a book/series for little fingers?
I remember one that I was allowed to color in once I had completed the lesson.
TIA,
Michael

Try Candida Tobin’s system.

It is brilliant. It is all based on the use of colour. It is incredibly well thought out.

excellent tip.  Thanks.  I am curious about using a color strategy.  My son learns from example, and visually (he has mild Autism, but is mainstreamed in Kindergarten).  I would need a plan to fade the colors from the program so that he does not become reliant on them.  Also, can English texts be purchased here in the States?  I supposed a UBN # could be used to order.

Candida Tobin’s books are available through her own publishing company. If you send her an email I am sure she will be able to advise you. She is an extremely nice lady and she has a real magic touch with children. She has also a CD-ROM with all of her material in an interactive format, which you may find more useful.

Best wishes
Bernhard

For FUN: try Alfred's Teaching Little Mozarts to Play.  You (as the teacher) read a story, and then the student plays a short piece of music.  Lots of very colourful pictures.

Another book I really like is "Chester's Easiet Piano Course" (available from musicroom.com) - it's English though, you know, crotchets instead of quarter notes (I'm Australian so it suits me great!!!!)  It's lot of FUN, with reminders, activities and theory thrown in.   It has a good sense of humour throughout and it won't break the bank.  (You don't NEED the supplementary stuff).

Hope you have lots of fun with Finn.

Poems of Ecstasy – Scriabin’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

The great early 20th-century composer Alexander Scriabin left us 74 published opuses, and several unpublished manuscripts, mainly from his teenage years – when he would never go to bed without first putting a copy of Chopin’s music under his pillow. All of these scores (220 pieces in total) can now be found on Piano Street’s Scriabin page. Read more
