How much to practice help
on: February 11, 2004, 12:53:58 AM
hey,
As i mentioned in a previous post, i am always extremely busy with academics, band (marching, concert, all county, all state, jazz), and scouts. I come home from school everyday sometimes not until 6! I am always very tired and find it hard to practice more than 1.5 or 2 hours on weekdays, and 3 hours on weekends (i could probably do more than that on weekends come to think of it). Is this enough to get me into a conservatory? I can't wake up any earlier than i am and can't stay up any late (family you see). I need help finding the time and energy to practice more if what im doing is not enough. Should i drop some things? thanks

It is enough to get one into a conservatory. Of course, I do not know how well you play :). I do less though and am heading off to the Royal Academy in London this year...

I know how you feel; I'm always horribly tired after I get home from school, activities, etc each day.  That seems like it should be enough time, but do your best to make it as efficient as possible.  1 hour of concentrated, efficient practice is better than 3 hours of distracted, lazy practice.  One should feel awake and energized after practice, not burnt out.

I practice about that much (or even less which is naughty) too but expect to be forced to practice bumloads at university, maybe 4 hours a day or more or something.
I find practicing in the morning (when my housemates let me) really good because it gets it out of the way so you don't get all overwhelmed at night. Plus I go off to work feeling very awake and good about myself.
To audition to get into the conservatorium I practiced 3 hours a day for a few months, though. Like, one hour of scales, and then two hours of only the pieces I was auditioning with.

First of all, if you want to be a great musician, you practically have to give up everything except your art.  I would never waste my time in high school band, it's such a joke.  1 1/2 hours a day will not cut it, unless you learn super fast and are really talented.

a small time may be enough for ed, but us mere mortals arent endowed with such amazing talents  ;)

and btw, if you want to be alot better at piano, you need to focus on it and drop the unnecesarys.
