My favourite is no.6 with rapid ocatave climax at the end! I also like no.2, no.9, no.12 (I started to like this piece when my frend played it on masterclass) and no.15. I also like Horowitz's transcriptions of nos. 2 , 15 and 19 and also Volodos's take on no.13

I was always rather fond of no5

btw, can anyone explain me what "Heroide-elegiaque" means?

Am I right in the assumption that it's some sort of mourning music for the death of a female hero or the lover of a hero?

2 and 11 were once my favorites, but Horowitz's transcription of the 19th beats all in my mind.

I voted for the second one.

I have only listened the 5, 6.

So.. as I can read here, the 12 is very popular.. xD
I also like Horowitz's transcriptions of nos. 2

:o

I don't like it, he skips so many things and the best parts he does not play!
Especially, the ending, I don't like it...-.-"

By the way, has someone watched Lang Lang play this one??XDXDXDXDXD

Ain't a bad recording but no way near concert standard.

Now I like hungarian Rhapsody in E minor. no 2 is just overplayed I rarely find my self listening to more than 1 minute of every recording. Still one kickingass piece.

Me too, I don't really care much for his Hungarian Rhapsodies and I usually find that most of them are pretty neglected in the standard repertoire of a pianist. I notice that some of his later works hinted the coming of the Impressionistic period/music, because some sound mysterious, eerie and misty.

you're very right/correct. musicologists and music historians have discussed and studied this and he was most definately using a more evolved harmonic and musical language towards the end that didn't quite fit the conventions of even very late romanticism, it wasn't quite there so it's not to say impressionism early but was definately hinting at it.

one of the examples i like most is looking (or listening) to the similarities of his

"Les Jeux d'Eaux à la Villa d'Este", this is from that time period he spent at a villa outside of rome (i believe)  during his later years (i believe he was already abba/ part of the lower clergy by then)

now listen to:

then we get stuff like this:

alll to my ear way more interesting the the HRs

As cliche and overplayed it is, I still say the second. There is a REASON it is so famous.

Other favourites though are 1, 3, 5, 8, 12.

I sort of agree. Liszt is my favourite composer and I do love the Rhapsodies, they certainly have their place. But I much prefer a lot of his other music. Things like the Sonata, Etudes,  Harmonies poétiques et religieuses,  Années de pèlerinage, Consolations, late piano works, etc... then things like the tone poems, symphonies, organ works, choral works...and many more. But that doesn't mean I don't find the Rhapsodies immensely enjoyable.

What I most like about Liszt is his arrangements/transcriptions/paraphrases on other composers just to promote their music and make them more accessible. My favourite is probably earlking and the Gretchen au spinnrade, composed by Schubert and the Faust Waltz by Gounod. He's such a wonderful chap just doing random acts of kindness. His operatic transcriptions I regard as the only ones superior to Thalberg.

I love that side, too. Not my favourite side, but I do love it. I think every great artist should aspire to be as generous and as charitable a human being as Franz Liszt was. I think his direct transcriptions are unmatched too...my favourites being the Wagner and Schubert transcriptions. I love some of his opera fantasies, the Norma Fantasy is one of my favourite works by him and a truly beautiful work. I also love the Don Juan, Lucia Di Lammermoor, Reverie on Romeo and Juliet, and many more.

Now my favourite has osmehow turned to Hungarian Rhapsody no 10 in E major, after watching a spectacular performance of the piece by Marc Andre Hamelin on Youtube, a few moments ago. But I must say, the best Hungarian Rhapsody recordings (the whole set) has to belong to Cziffra, the best Liszt interpreter who ever lived. I wonder, if Liszt was better than Cziffra, how good can it get.....

But it is a shame. None of the modern transcriptions by modern pianists I hear being played by another fellow pianist just as famous. I read in a thread that Tausig's transcriptions could rival LIszt. I've only heard his ride of the valkyries transcription. Very good. Generally I'm not a fan of transcriptions but Liszt has turned them into ingenious pieces of artworks.
Liszt was very popular so he was rich. I doubt any pianist can  match the generosity of Liszt. They would have to be like the best pianist alive.
