He names it along with a Mozart concerto as his favourite, he says why he loves it, something about the rhapsodic structure and the free flow of musical ideas.

its mostly just personal opinion. sure, it may be a good composition, but it highly overrated and gets more credit than it really deserves. the 2nd concerto, in my opinion is a greater work and deserves more credit and fame than it gets. i see that "free flow of musical ideas" in the 1st concerto as a lack of direction and unorganization rather than an impressive rhapsodic piece. i dunno, it just doesnt do it for me.

Someone on eBay was selling all  the Tchaik concertos with Pletnev with Fedesrov (sp? - the dude he recoded them with).

it was with fedoseyev. save your money and get the set with peter donohoe and rudolf barshai. its the best complete piano/orch set of tchaikovsky ive come across. the zhukov set is good, too, but the quality isnt as good.

i have to admit that he does say he does like the tchaik 1, brahms 2 and mozart k271 a lot... he doesn't directly say favourites... but he greatly implies it. a shocker i know! i prefer tchaik 2 too! k271 ("jeunehomme") is also my favourite mozart if i had to choose... it's one everyone's heard.
The brahms 2 is fantastic though - especially hamelin's.

I think it is written down, I didn't bother to follow the whole cadenza in the score but the end looks pretty similar to what Pletnev plays.

thanks, nicco, and everyone for explaining all this.  i thought he was making it up.  ok. so he made up 1/2 the cadenza - or is it all tchaikovsky's.  this cadenza stuff must be really fun once you're good enough to improvise.  pletnev is now in front of barry douglas - i hate to say.

it may sound like its improvised because pletnev plays it so dryly and rushed that the notes get lost. if you want a good rec, get gilels or donohoe for this.
