trying to fix my piano
on: January 12, 2007, 11:22:03 PM
One of my notes doesn't make any noise when i hit the key, this has been doing this for a very long time. I took the front of the piano off to take a look and saw that that key's hammer isn't moving far enough towards the string. I looked further and saw that the thing that pushes the hammer is sticking out from underneath the hammer. (I don't know what this thing is called but if i was talking about a real hammer the thing would hit be pushing up on the bottom of the handle). I pushed that thing back underneath the hammer and it worked for about 5 hits of the key than came back out. The only adjustment i see is a little hook screw thing when you screw it in it might tighten up on some spring but i don't know if this will help the problem. If it helps i have an upright piano.

I wish I could help you, but I don't know enough.
But these sorts of things are not an amateur job.
Get a technician over. Call several to get an idea of the price they will charge.
I know these repairs are expensive, but if you scarcely know what you are doing, you may screw things up worse.
A technician repair visit in my small midwest city would cost about $75. In a place like New York City, heaven only knows. Maybe a small fortune.
