Recital ideas
on: January 14, 2007, 11:23:17 PM
I'm thinking of the following recital programmes. It's just a few ideas

Mozart C minor sonata K457

Beethoven Les Adiux Sonata

Interval

Chopin 4 ballades

2nd idea

want to play Chopin opus 10, complete, but don't know what to play with it. I would do it in the 2nd half, but can't think what to do in first half. Maybe some Bach, as Chopin was os fond of Bach.

To match up in the second half the complete program would have to be something like 8 hours long, judging by your posts.

The ballades arnd etudes are quite heady stuff and athletic in their demands..I think to go for an extended piece of Bach perhaps a toccata - id suggest the e min one and then possibly a contrasting sonata of Mozart perhaps the longer C major one k330 or something like that would keep the programme relevant to chopins development whilst being balanced, fresh , not too long And importantly not above what is comfortably manageable by you in performance.

Is it just me or programming 2 sonatas is somewhat a faux pas? (unless it's a program of one composer).

I was thinking about maybe an all Chopin recital. 4 ballades in 2nd half, in First half I could play some noctures, preludes, and maybe finish with the 3rd scherzo. Etudes for the encores  ;D If I get any encores haha.

If you're doing an all-Chopin program, how about one of the Sonatas as well? You're going to need a counterweight to the 40 minutes of Ballades in the 2nd half.

Yeh a sonata would be cool, just I havn't actually played any of the sonata's, and I don't really want to include anything I havn't already played as I have a lot of new repertoire to learn at the moment.

I saw Gavrilov give a concert last year, first half was all Chopin.  He alternated between Nocturnes and Etudes - it was really effective and original!  It might also be possible alternating Preludes and Etudes, though not everyone would like splitting them up.

His second half was Prokofiev 10 pieces from Romeo & Juliet.

Okay, so list the major Chopin works you have under your belt, besides the Ballades.

Scherzo's 2 and 3
Polonaise no.1 2, and I'm sure I could pull up the F# minor one in a few weeks
F minor fantasy..I never finished this properly, but I'm sure I will be able to in a short space.

A selection of etudes and preludes.

Definitely the F# minor Polonaise, Op.44. Here's an idea for a total program:

Preludes (4 or 5 of them, perhaps)

(Op.28 No.1, No.8, No.11, No.12 maybe? Or your choice from whichever ones you play)

Nocturnes

(Op.48 and Op.55 are my personal favorites, but again it's up to you)

A medium-sized work (or a few Etudes, if you prefer)

Polonaise Op.44

INTERMISSION

Ballade 1

Ballade 2

Ballade 3

Ballade 4

Etudes would be satisfactory for encores. If you haven't learned it by now, I strongly recommend looking at the Tarantella in A-flat, Op.43. That's a fantastic showpiece, and at a little over 3 minutes long it's the perfect encore IMO.

as much as i like the ballades, to play all of them in succession ( though am sure been done many times) feels abit tasky and can be draggy. just an opinion of one person. tds

no, I'd have to end on the 4th, the end is so much better than the 1st ballade coda. It's amazing just listening to the ballades in succession, you hear how much Chopin matured, I think to distort the order would be strange, and wouldn't work.

How long is recital going to be?

8 hours or so?
Bach - Partita No.2
Scriabin - Etude 8/12
Debussy - L'isle Joyeuse
Liszt - Un Sospiro

Goal:
Prokofiev - Toccata

hmm, i would go to a recital like that ( 4 ballades in succession ) only if i like the quality of the pianist. otherwise, i'd rather do anything else. tds

ehh? 8 hours?

What about Schubert D960?  Or the 19th sonata instead?  Schubert's amazing , and completely worth all difficulties.
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)
