Depends on how much you play it, my grand gets tuned every three months, and it's also very necessary by then.

Generally, as soon as you tune your piano, an hour later it will fall out. Thats why concert pianists tune their pianos before practice,, and again before their performance (same day).
since none of us really need that level of precision during our daily lives, we get ours tuned every so often.
New pianos tend to be tuned more frequently (every 3-4 months). after the first year or so,, your piano will start to hold its tune, and you can pass your tuning about every 6 months (at least twice a year)... however, like the previous post,,
humidity
and
amount/level of play
will factor these numbers.
Keep this in mind,, the more often you tune, the greater your pianos tuning stability will become.
you're the best person to judge when your piano needs tuning,, no one else. expect it around every 2-6 months.

I religiously have my piano tuned every 3 months. It is too valuable to me to not attend to it. You regularly have your car serviced. Or your furnace cleaned and checked. Your teeth cleaned... I find that over the years having kept up with regular 3 month tunings has kept the instrument in top condition. When I sit down to play I never have to worry about anything. It is perfect!!!! JP

3 months if you play Rachmaninoff for 2 hours a day.
6 months if you play Debussy for 2 hours a day.
3 months is too much for me even though it bothers me. First of all there is financial issue, and second of all, I am not performing for anyone but myself, therefore no.
If i had the choice though, i would do it everyday

Interesting question. It is hard to provide a simple cut-and-dried answer. Some considerations --
1. How sensitive are you to very slight departures from tuning? What might grate on one player would not be highly troubling to another.
2. The environment makes a difference. If your piano is in a temperature and humidity controlled setting, is not exposed to sunlight, and is not near any heating register, it will likely hold its tune longer.
3. My own tuner says that a very robust "forte" style of playing takes a piano out of tune faster than more serene, quiet selections. And -- how many hours a week?
4. The individual piano. They vary. My tuner tells us that our particular mid-sized grand is very stable with respect to tuning. He comes once a year. He often remarks how little the piano has departed from the correct tuning. It may help that this piano is very settled in -- it has been in the same room in the same location for 19 years now.
So you see it is a complex question with several variables. No doubt if money is ample and you are fussy about the finest degree of tuning, you could have it tuned more frequently. For us, at least based on our tuner's advice, once a year is enough.
Once the tuner came six months after the previous tune, worked with the piano for a minute or two, and told us, "this piano does not need tuning. Call me in six months."
I am somewhat hard of hearing, so I must rely on the advice and judgment of my tuner, and others.

3 months if you play Rachmaninoff for 2 hours a day.
6 months if you play Debussy for 2 hours a day.
And how frequently if you play Finnissy and Xenakis for 2 hours a day?...
Best,
Alistair
