I have a 1944 edition
How do I know if it's copyrighted?

If it's copyrighted...
I don't think so

Of course it is. You just need some connections.

If the composer is living, it's copyrighted without question.

If the composer died in the last 70 years, it's copyrighted too.

Did you know, that Ravel's music is copyrighted until the end of 2007 ?
If it doesn't work - try something different!

No, I didn't know that, so is Gershwin, apparently...

I just checked some sites and forums about that and came up with the +70 year rule as well
What I still don't know is how to tell if the edition itself is copyrighted
In the US there is a 1923 year rule apparently, in Europe I couldn't find any rules regarding that issue yet
