Master Class wtih Lang Lang
on: February 11, 2007, 09:53:20 AM
Interesting day,  I attended my first Masters Class today held by Lang Lang here in Los Angeles.  Lang Lang is in town for his concert this weekend at the Disney Concert Hall.

I had the opportunity to attend front row seating in his class, with Marc Yu as one of the participants.  Lang Lang walks in with yellow shoes, pink shirt, black sport jacket, sun glasses, and multi-colored scarfs around his neck..  looking like an Asian Jimmy Hendrix.  This guy is a total character. He's also quite funny while conducting the class..

I'd always make fun of the way this guy acted while performing, but honestly after having a chance to attend this event, and meet him personally after the 2 1/2 class.  I totally gained respect for him, despite his goofy antics..

Unfortunately, Like an idiot I forgot my camera since all I was thinking about was beating L.A. traffic,, I however had a chance to use my Cell phone video camera to capture parts of the class.

Curious, has anyone attended these type of classes? and by who?

I think that's great. It's a good thing that people like him are changing the 'pianistic image'. Away with the elitism, it's just an instrument, it's just music, thumbs up for lang lang.

I've attended classes with vladimir feltsman before and he's quite the character as well.

Wow, it sounds like he threw up the ladies' section of a department store all over himself.

I think it was last year when he was in town to play the Bartok Concerto #2 at Disney Hall that I saw him give a masterclass in Pasadena. He taught the Liszt Tarentella, some  Rachmaninoff piece, and the Ginastera Danzas Argentinas mvts 2 + 3. He is a very good masterclass giver, it may not have been deeply insightful, but his musical ideas were still very exciting.

So since you're around LA, who/where do you study with/at?

i dont usually ask questions in a masterclass.

but if had a chance to attend LL masterclass, i'd want to ask one question, i.e:

"while playing the piano, mr. lang lang, which way would you suggest to us, to roll our eyes clockwise or counterclockwise?

that's all
