How Many Waltzes did CHopin write?
on: February 19, 2007, 04:21:55 PM
I have a CD with 19 on it, one I just love, on the CD it's performed right before the "Minute" Waltz, very robust, uplifting sounding piece.  This weekend I went to the library and checked out the Schrimer edition of Chopin's Waltzes, it only had 16.  I read through them all and although there are some great pieces to work on, not the particular Waltz I was looking for.  Any suggestions?  Perhaps a more complete edition? Thanks, Eric

 Dear fellows:
 That's a very interesting question. Follows what I found in the Grove, and it's surprising: neither the 20 nor the 15 I have in my Urtext edition.

17 waltzes confirmed to be by the composer.
Opus 18 (Eb, 1831–2)
Opus 34/1 (Ab, 15 Sept 1835)
Opus 34/2 (a, c1834)
Opus 34/3 (F, 1838)
Opus 42 (Ab, 1840)
Opus 64/1 (Db, 1847)
Opus 64/2 (c#, 1847)
Opus 64/3 (Ab, 1847)
Opus 69/1 (Ab, 1835)
Opus 69/2 (b, 1829)
Opus 70/1 (Gb, 1832)
Opus 70/2 (f, 1842)
Opus 70/3 (Db, 1829)

IVb/11 (a, 1847)
IVa/12 (E, c1829)
IVa/13 (Ab, 1830)
IVa/15 (e, 1830)

Furthermore, there are 12 lost waltzes:
waltz, a, 1824, ded. Countess Łubieńska;
in C, KK Vb/8, ?1824;
in C, B p.11, KK Vb/3, 1826;
in Ab, KK Vb/4, 1827;
in d (’La partenza’), B p.23, KK Vb/6, 1828;
in Ab, KK Vb/5, B p.62, 1829 or 1830;
in Eb, KK Vb/7, 1829 or 1830, listed in catalogue by Ludwika Jędrzejewicz;
KK Ve/10, listed in auction catalogue, Paris, March 1906;
KK Ve/11, mentioned in letters from Breitkopf & Härtel to Izabela Barcińska, 1878;
KK Ve/12, mentioned in diary of L. Niedźwiecki, 1845;
Waltz in B, KK Va/3, 12 Oct 1848, ded. Mrs Erskine;
MS, title page only, formerly owned by W. Westley Mannings (London)

Finally, two doubtful works:
‘Valse mélancolique’, f#, KK Ib/7, CI;
Waltz in Eb, KK IVa/14, 1827

 Hope this helps. Best wishes!

So does anyone have the set of 20 online to share?

 Dear Thal:
 I'm looking at your list, and we are near the truth!
 - 13 with opus number: OK;
 - the 2 posthumous are IVa/12 and IVa/15;
 - IVb/11 & Iva/13 match the Grove list of authentical.
 (those are the 17)

 - IVa/14 is a doubtful work, or at least it was back in 2003.
 - your Ia/7 isn't Ib/7?
 (19 so far)

 Miss one that I didn't find (Va/10).

 Do you have any other source to compare?
 Best!

 Dear Eric:
 The Forum have it in its database, so I don't think anyone will post it here.
 Best!

I must have gotten 'scammed' because my book "complete waltzes and scherzos" only came with 15 waltzes

Always beware of the word "complete".

The others are of no great value when compared to the 15.

Dover, the same one I have.

But I am in complete agreement with Thal, you are not losing anything in the last 5 waltzes, with the possible exception of No.20 in F# minor.

The best of the posthumous waltzes is the E minor one anyway, which is included, so it's fine.

The Dover editor was diligent enough to name the volume "Waltzes and Scherzos" instead of "Complete Waltzes and Scherzos".

Oops, you're right! My bad!  ;D

No idea which one it is, then. You're still not missing much, Ibty.
