comtemporary piece
on: February 25, 2007, 02:50:42 PM
Hey

I'm searching for a contemporary piece (about 10 min.; it can be shorter or longer)
Anyone suggestions? I'd rather choose something that the public can appreciate...
I think it's very difficult to find something. I love music with a bit of character, powerful, but also other things.
All suggestions are welcome.

Hi,

what about the Danzas Argentinas op.2 by Ginastera? They have catchy melodies and it's the kind of modern stuff that doesn't make the Mozart-devotee want to throw up  ;D. They're not that contemporary (1937), ok, but they contain a nice mix between dissonance and consonnance. I think an average performance of the three of them takes 8-9 min.

I write alot of piano music.  go to my website at mattgreenecomposer.com
If that's not for you then how about, Ginestera, Gershwin, Prokofiev.  I also like the 6 Muscinsky preludes.

The Muczynski Preludes Op. 6 are great.  I would definitely recommend learning the whole set.

Contemporary doesn't mean 20th century - Prokofiev died a long time ago.  So did barber.

I recommend Liebermann's Nocturne no. 3.

If you mean 20th century, not contemporary, how about Barber Ballade, op. 46?

Do you think I would get away with improvising the 2 pages before the last two pages in a competition? I don't have enough time to learn it properly.

How does one judge an obscure contemporary piece? For one thing the judges must have access to the sheet music, which may exist only in facsimile. For atonal music, is note accuracy secondary to sweep and presentation?

If it's very obscure, you could get away with faking it :p.
