Khachaturian's Toccata
on: February 24, 2004, 11:07:41 AM
Hello all

I've started studying for my certificate in piano performance after three or four years of playing purely for pleasure.
Masochistically, I've picked out Khachaturian's Toccata as one of my three chosen pieces, which is progressing suprisingly well considering my technical skills had been neglected for so long.
What I'd like to hear from ya'll are any hints, tips or opinions on how you've learned, or like to hear, the toccata play.
Any advice would be wonderful, opinions on the piece would be great too.

Thanks a bunch

I really like this toccata. I played it several years ago, and I too was surprised at how easily I learned the basic structure of the piece. For me, the two most important things to remember are voicing and phrasing. One of the things I found hardest about the piece is the repeated Bb. If you alternate fingers between your hands each time, and stroke rather than hit the key, you will have better luck. The slow section in the middle is absolutely wonderful! Give it all of the drama it deserves! Good luck with this! If I need to explain anything else, or you have specific questions, post again, and I'll try to help you. It has been several years though.
