Wrong music desk
on: March 06, 2007, 02:26:53 AM
I have a restored 6'4" 1917 Knabe. When I bought it, it came with a Steinway music desk, and the restorer who sold it to me had bought it the same way. It's never fit right--instead of sitting on top of the brass tracks like a Knabe desk should it squeezes between them--and after years of wrestling with it I've had it. Any advice about how I might either find a Knabe music desk to match the original or somehow refit the Steinway desk so it sits on top as it should? Thanks.

You might consider having a qualified cabinet maker take a look at the desk and the piano connection and retrofit the ends of the existing desk to fit the piano.    The idea would be for the cabinet maker (or qualified woodworker) to modify the ends of the desk - perhaps by cutting away to end that does not fit the track, and attaching new at each end that has been shaped to accept the tracks on the piano.  There are wood joinery methods that can be provide very strong joints for this purpose.  The re-attached wood fitting would  be sanded or planed smooth to blend with the adjacent desk, and the whole affair re finished to match the piano.

Thanks, I'll ask around.  One concern I had was of not adding any height to it (so that it would still fit with the lid closed) and your way would solve that problem.

I do sometimes think about the Steinway with a Knabe desk, out there somewhere. . .
