LISZT ETUDES!
on: February 29, 2004, 02:15:42 AM

i have the 1826 first drafts,

i need the most fiery and technically flawless one, if it even exists, cause i cant find it !!!

also, i have the score to all 1851,

but i would like to find scores for the 26' and 38' versions, anywhere online? to buy? to download?

Leslie Howard on the Hyperion label.
If even Leslie hasn't done them, then no one else on the globe has.

HI!!  I was in a situation like your own recently.  here's what I did..

Go to www.amazon.ca (or amazon.com depending on where you live)

do a search for "Complete Etudes For Solo Piano"

various items should pop up, the one you want is a yellowish - greenish book. (Dover Publication)
(Make sure YOU HAVE "SERIES I")

This book is AWESOME!!!

It contains the etude in 12 exercises (1826)
12 grand etudes (1837)
Mazeppa - A capriccio
12 Transcendental Etudes

this is the only way I can conceive of to get all etudes in all three settings in a single book less than 15$.

I've enjoyed helping you.
bye!

He wants a recording, donjuan...but I must admit, that's a good edition of the sheet music.

OOKKK, well Leslie Howard has an edition of the etude in 12 exercises in the CD "The Young Liszt" available only, as far as I know from Amazon.com. Don't go to the site and SEARCH for it.. it won't show up as one of the results.  Type in "Leslie Howard" as a keyword, and a list of 80 - 90 hits will show up.  "The Young Liszt" will be near the end somewhere.

Janice Weber has a set of the grand etudes.  I forget who the publisher is, all I know is I got it from the public Library and burnt myself a copy.

This is particularly a great recording because it features MAZEPPA - a capriccio, a separate work from the 38' setting and 51' setting.

Wow, the morceau de salon sounds amazing...and extremely difficult at the same time.

One of the volume of the Konemann Liszt had the 26 version in it - not sure which draft though.  (if ya can still find it)
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

I'm learning the Grande Etude No. 10 right now and it is wicked.
I'm playing the Transcendental Etude No. 10 this Wednesday on Student Recital for scholarship auditions.

You should definately approach Leslie Howard about the recording.  He is probably 'the' leading figure on the subject and has worked on editions of the transcendentals.  You can probably get in touch through his management company or the Liszt society.
