My DipABRSM Repertoire
on: April 19, 2007, 02:36:14 PM
Here it is so far, please comment

Beethoven: Sonata op.13 in C Minor Pathetique
Scriabin: Sonata Fantaisie (please see note below)

now
Schumann: Des Abends and Aufschwung (not sure about this)
or
Poulenc: Toccata and Chopin: Impromptu No.3 in Gb

The note is which Sonata Fantaisie the syllabus refers to. According to my knowledge, there is Sonata no.2 and unnumbered sonata which is also named Sonata Fantasy, and I think it's the latter.

Don't think of making me do Baroque.
I focus mainly on 20th century pieces, so if anyone can provide me a programme which is balanced and contrasted. I have used up my time limit for own choice piece (Scriabin).
Bach - Partita No.2
Scriabin - Etude 8/12
Debussy - L'isle Joyeuse
Liszt - Un Sospiro

Goal:
Prokofiev - Toccata

Pathetique? For DipABRSM?

If I were you, I'd go with the Poulenc and Chopin instead of the Schumann, but that's just my personal preference, and either one leaves you with two large Romantic pieces- with the Schumann, 3, actually...

Might I ask why no Baroque? If you hate Bach, there are several other alternatives.  :)

Why not try some Scarlatti?

Otherwise, go with the Chopin/Poulenc as it offers more varied styles in your recital.

The Pathetique is in the DipABRSM syllabus.

Thanks for your replies, but Baroque is just not my style.
I'd rather have a narrower period, and have contrasted pieces, rather than scoring badly on one piece.
I can also justify my repertoire in viva voce I guess.

How if the time limit scoring if I take the Scriabin, Pathetique, Chop and Poulenc?

In the viva voce, what exactly are you going to say if they ask why no Baroque?

I wouldnt say 'its not my style and i'd rather play something i am good at' or anything along those lines if i were you because you dont want to use any negatives in the discussion. you never use negatives in an exam.

you do have a good program though. particularly the Scriabin and the Poulenc

Just be wary of the syllabus on page 7 under Programming (second paragraph) - the key words are 'generalist programme', 'wide-ranging yet coherent mixture of periods etc'.

I am sure you will be asked about the absence of a Baroque work in your programme (my teacher is an ABRSM examiner).

What does your teacher say?

My repertoire for the London diploma (then I'll do the Abrsm one - the London apparently requires less musicality as I understand it) is:
Pathetique (Movt 2 & 3) - learnt already
Scarlatti Sonatas Kp. 535 (learnt already) and Kp. 213
Schumann Aufschwung - learnt already
But the London only requires 15 min program so I think that about fills the time.
For when I do Abrsm, I think I will include the full Pathetique and a couple of Scriabin preludes. If I need any more time, I will include Bartok's Ostinato from Mikrokosmos.
So our programs seem pretty similar. How's your Aufschwung coming on? I find it impossibly difficult to get the melody out when I'm only playing it with my right pinkie!
Thanks,
Tom

Well, I am going to say, despite the lack of baroque, I still believe I have managed to achieve a balanced and well ranged repertoire.
Not necessarily in a physical sense (as in time, or musical eras), but through musical differences that my repertoire brings out.
This is further supported by the significantly different composing styles that the composers in my repertoire employs.

Well here it is updated, quite a major change:

Beethoven - Pathetique Sonata

Chopin - Ballade No.3 in Ab Major (custom choice) [is this too hard? this piece is also in the LRSM repertoire, along with the other ballades]

Scriabin - 2 preludes from op.11 (no. 9 and no.14)

Debussy - Preludes Book.1 No.10 La Cathedrale Engloutie

Schoenberg - 6 little pieces for Piano op.19

Meh, what on earth was I thinking when I selected that repertoire?

Comments? Are they DipABRSM level? Will I be able to learn all of them in time?
Playing for 35 minutes is quite a damn long time, man...
Making a recital is sure hard.
Hmm, perhaps i can fake a balanced repertoire by rearranging the pieces that I am going to do them in..

I don't know many of the pieces in the DipABRSM, so..
what are some major works? I need a major work in the 20th C or Romantic Era..so I can change my repertoire..
Bach - Partita No.2
Scriabin - Etude 8/12
Debussy - L'isle Joyeuse
Liszt - Un Sospiro

Goal:
Prokofiev - Toccata

What if i change Cathedrale Engloutie with a shorter piece...Poulenc - Toccata?
That might allow more time for me to rest..

The Sonata Fantaisie is under DipABRSM?!  Isn't it at least LRSM level?
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

oh wow  :o,  Pathetique  is a Dip ABRSM piece, for RCM ARCT, it is too easy to be accepted as a dip piece and we have to learn 6 pieces in total count including: 1 Bach, 1 Full-Sonata, 1 18th, 1 Neo-Classical/18th/20C, 1 20th C and a concert etude. You guys have it easy.
J.S Bach Italian Concerto,Beethoven Sonata op.2 no.2,Mozart Sonatas K.330&333,Chopin Scherzo no.2,Etude op.10 no.12&Fantasie Impromptu
