New Saying

A Chinese friend of mine, new to English, wouldn't say "what the hell?" when she was shocked or upset.  Instead, she would say "what is the hell?"

Example, "so my violin teacher changed all my fingerings the night before my recital.....what is the hell!?"

I have since adapted this, as have my friends, and I suggest we all adapt this here as well.

I've noticed a lot of people saying "yeah, no"  or "no, yeah"

"So did you ever find that missing sock?"

"yeah no, it's gone"

or

"no yeah, it was in the fridge"

ah no, yeah I say that alot.

Someone was telling me of a new saying.  They were describing something that was a bit outlandish and the kid remarked "that's asylum" (meaning crazy)

When (is) the hell did emo come into general use? I heard it the first time a couple months ago or am I just behind the times?
o yeh, randomly, the the random abuse of the random word 'random' ramdomly starts to randomly annoy me.

Yes, and her answering machine would say, "Hi this is Jing, I'm sorry I cannot take your phone right now...."

Is THAT where this all started?  "Yeah, no" makes about as crazy as George Bush or Jack Bauer saying "nuculer" (nuclear)...

I say that too.  But, in addition, I say 'foot' when something 'goes wrong'.

I didn't realize "yeahno" was widespread.  It must have been from Friends, that show was pretty popular.

Here's something else I've noticed, I think I've traced it to a particular friend but maybe it's widespread: saying "I dunno" before everything.

"How was your weekend vacation?"
"I dunno, it was good we went waterskiing"

"Hey what's up?"
"I dunno, we're all at Tim's watching the game"

"Wanna come play some tennis?"
"I dunno... No, yeah, sure I'll come"

I heard "what it is" is somewhat of a shibboleth in New Orleans.  They ask you a question....I forgot what question...and you say, "what it is!" and that's how  they know you're a native.

That's hilarious!  My grandfather used to say that to me when I was younger - I would get to their house and he would give me a "noogie" and go, "Hey kid...what it is!"  Hard to describe, but that saying brought back a fond memory...
