Xenakis and the Harpsichord.
on: May 16, 2007, 12:56:27 AM
Anybody like his music which includes the harpsichord?
Anybody know where I can buy scores to his solo harpsichord pieces?
Anybody know anything in regards to the "modern harpsichord he wrote for???"
Anybody think this should not be on PIANO street??? LOL

I'm not too familiar with the, but I did find them interesting. You can get a book written by Ian Pace on these works here:

I'm pretty sure that you can get the scores from Salabert, who publishes most (if not all) of Xenakis's music. Btw, I dont think this is fit for Pianostreet, haha. As the liner notes of a CD says (don't remember which one), Couperin would weep if he heard these.

-they are pretty intense, most people here will just blow it off as noise... if you like Xenakis's work you will probably like them (not so much the solo percussion works, but his more abstract pieces for solo instruments.)

-hey, im glad to hear you enjoyed it. Im happy when people understand what Xenakis wanted to say. Any modern composer really these days, most people really dont care to listen or understand any sort of message. Im glad you liked the piece.

The harpsichord works are definitely pretty involved, and I love the rhythms he uses. It's not keys-related, but I would whole-heartedly recommend the piece 'XAS' for saxophone quartet. I picked that up on eMusic on a disc with the Rascher quartet playing it alongside pieces by Per Norgard and Hindemith and it is a beautiful work (even amongst the quarter-tone built harmonies!). Looking at the conductor's score of that piece is dizzying. Xenakis is definitely a genius worthy of attention (way more so than the minimalist contemporaries who get way too much love).
