Competition Repertoire
on: June 09, 2007, 06:00:36 AM
Hi Everyone,
My teacher decided to let me try a competitive class instead for Richmond Fest (Canada), I have 2 options that I can choose from, which do you think is better and why?any additional advice or tips are welcome. For those of you who have experience winning a competition, what makes you stand out?

Bach-Partita in C minor No.2 (sinfonia)
Haydn-Sonata in E flat HVI/49;L/59 1st&3rd movement
and
Chopin-Etude in G flat major "Black Key" Op.10 No.5
or
Chopin-Etude in F major Op.10 No.8

Thanks!
J.S Bach Italian Concerto,Beethoven Sonata op.2 no.2,Mozart Sonatas K.330&333,Chopin Scherzo no.2,Etude op.10 no.12&Fantasie Impromptu

If you play both etudes equally well then I would pick 10/8 because you can show more pianistic skills with it than 10/5. From my experience it is rare that someone picks 10/5 among chopets in a competitive context, it is relatively easy -- even if it sounds difficult to the laymen.

my teacher just gave me another option, which I think would suit me more as I still have yet to develop me skills for playing etudes.

Competitive
- Multiple Parts (2 contrasting movements of a classical sonata)
  : Haydn Sonata in E flat HVI 49/:L/59 (1st and 3rd movement)
+ (maybe) Romantic Piece
  : Rachmaninoff Prelude Op.32 No.12
   or
   Mendelssohn Rondo Cappriccioso
and
Non-Competitive
- Mini Recital ( 3 pieces that show contrast)
: Bach Partita in c minor No.2 (Sinfonia)
Haydn Sonata in E flat HVI 49/:L/59 ( 1st movement)
   +
   Rachmaninoff Prelude Op.32 No.12
   or
   Mendelssohn Rondo Cappriccioso

What do you think?
