10,000 maniacs
on: June 13, 2007, 07:00:48 AM
I am a fan, but the group is not what this is about.

I just watched the 9th Van Cliburn on video (so 80's!) and was amazed by the likes of Chris Taylor and Johan Schmidtt not becoming super popular pianisits.  Which in turn got me thinking, there must easily be 10,000 concert pianists active right now.

Here is where you come in.  Let's make a list.  The rules are:

The pianist must be alive and actively playing in public or making recordings, give or take three years.  Pogorelich, for example, would count as a concert pianist currently active.  Argerich would too.  Sviatoslav Richter would not.

Amaizing is not a requirement, so for example, I would count.

To get things started, here are some (over a hundred to begin with, although I could not think of anyone starting with Q (Last name, not sure whether Teresa Quesda is alive and playing):

Arta Arnicane
Elena Abend
Victor Alexeev
Greg Anderson
Argerich

barry douglas, murray perahia, our own koji attwood, labeque sisters, brown family...

perhaps it matters most if any are within a three miles radius of your teaching studio.  it could severely dampen the atmosphere - although - you could easily get to piano lessons yourself.

I find your lack of norwegian pianists deeply disturbing.

Super, but you have to take out the dead and inactive ones.  Any in your list?

No, I'm pretty sure they are all alive and still active, including the unbelievable at 91 years young Earl Wild!

You know, I'm not sure about Wild, come to think of it. I know he recorded a CD a year or so ago and gave a recital when he turned 90 in 2005 but I'm not sure what he's doing right now. Hmmmm.
