I think you've both done very well, I'd never be able to learn that piece so quickly, if I could learn it at all.

Maybe it's just me, but I felt both recordings could've been more dramatic, even though I liked many of the things PianoWolfi did with regards to dynamics. At 1:31 in his rec, phil13 seems to get close to the sound that I think the piece should have, the bass ringing as huge bells with as much agitation as possible in the right hand.

To sum up, I'd like to hear both the recordings with a more powerful and dramatic interpretation, although I suppose that could be said to be a matter of interpretation. I don't feel quite qualified to pick a winner, but congratulations to both of you for doing a good job, especially with the time frame in mind

I agree completaly with Rallestar.
It's very close, and you both didn't perfect the piece yet. When I really have to vote my vote goes to Phil.

But congratulations to both, I really appreciate that finally people reΰly compete with each other.

I do believe you are right about this being the first one.

Wolfi, didn't you have another duel that was to be carried out today too?

Phil

Yeah it's Mozart Fantasy c-minor with imbetter, but he asked me if we could do it tomorrow :P and today I was anyway very busy and nervous because I did a live performance of my composition "Styx" for the local Chopin Society meeting.

So far thank you all for your comments :)

It's interesting and it's fun actually :) 8)

And phil, what piano do you play on? I think your bass is much better than mine. >:( ;D

thanks :) yeah I will keep it up: As for "Styx", you can find the original improvisation here

but I play it a bit differently now, the last section for instance I play much faster. I'll post a rec soon, the one of today has too much reverb, because the performance took place in a church :P

It's very close, indeed.

I feel that Wolfi's is cleaner, but I have to go with Phil's. I love his range of dynamics and personally feel much more of an emotional response from his rec than Wolfi's.

BEAUTIFUL playing though- both of you!!! You guys are going to own me in the mazurka duel.  :-\
[lau] 10:01 pm: like in 10/4 i think those little slurs everywhere are pointless for the music, but I understand if it was for improving technique

Good work, both of you! You are both stretched at moments and there are clinkers but you both played this well. Wolfi is cleaner, phil13 is more tempermental and forceful in the appropriate places, such as the ending. Kudos to both of you.  8)

It's a draw, imo.

Very good, both of you.    :)

This is a hard one to decide.  Pianowolifi wins technically; there is more contrast with Phil and he draws us in emotionally.

These duels are fun.

I listened to both of them.

I agree with most people that it is very close.  You both have command of the piece and are expressive.  Phil's rec is clearer (rec quality -- it sounds a bit muddy in places tho), while wolfi's is a bit cleaner.  I think Phil's is freer and has a bit more character.  I would call this a draw, but if I had to choose one winner, I would go with Phil.  Great job both!

Can I join in this Rach 23/7 duel? even though my rendition lacks the brilliance your's does.

Anyway, congrats to you both for learning this annoyingly difficult piece and playing it well.

I love the sonorities you guys bring out in this piece.

Phil's was wilder, which is good, but wolfi was definitely cleaner.  I'd say its a tie.
