Especially on the internet, and especially with regards to *unintentional' examples.

Offend is defined : 'cause to feel resentment or indignation; "Her tactless remark offended me"'

It can be direct - offending something close to the heart of the person, or indirect - offending the 'moral code' of the person.

This is an interesting issue more now with the advent of the internet than ever.
Because of the nature of forums and online environments, comments can be read by people all around the world, from many cultures, and some people can be unintentionally offended.

How cautious should someone be?
To reiterate other posts I've made - should people have more responsibility for how they express themselves, or should the 'interpreters' have responsibility to understand that perhaps no offense was meant?

There are so many different circumstances where unintentional offence can be given to especially sensitive people that it's hard to generalise...

For example, many people post online in English even where it's not their first language - we have many such people here on Pianostreet - and sometimes things can be written that are not in any way meant maliciously but someone's unfamiliarity with the language they are writing in can make them blunt or mistake a word or its shades of meaning to a native speaker as opposed to the dictionary definition.

There are only two general things that really offend me in cyberspace. One is malice, insensitivity or ignorance from someone who I can reasonably assume should know better, and the other is bad and/or inappropriate language from someone I can reasonably assume is pretty fluent in the language they're writing in.

I think broadly similar rules go as for normal conversation. Both parties have a responsibility to make allowances for each others views and to be considerate of each other - manners are important in both cases!

Nothing offends me. I don't understand the concept of being offended.

Isn't that something that is part of a 'pride culture' where you must prevent people from trying to question your pride?

Or maybe 'honour' is the right word.

Personal attack, as an (X) Apachi member i can assure you violence is sometimes the only way to sort people out. (sad but true).

Nothing really offends me except ignorance, which can seem paradoxical, for I can offend myself! I don't think much of personal attacks, racism, "bad" language, and other things like that. I feel that if one is offended by those things, then that person is weaker inside than the person saying these "offensive" things, especially if its online.

No not really, thinking back a little, those so called personal attack often turn into knife ,phyiscal or gun attack. I remember white guys starting street fights with non-whites, they were sometimes cought by memebers  of the Apachi beaten to death to near death, then a SwastiKas were posted through their parents letter box  the following day;).

I in principal try to make no difference between being on the internet or being in "real life". I try to act exactly the same. Means: my ethical and moral "code" is valid for both equally. There is no cyberspace. There is ONE reality. And I know that I am responsible for what I do, in any case.

it offends me when someone says something is bad just because they don't like it.
as a person with offbeat tastes in music (especially) and movies, it hurts my soul. :(
I can take it, i just would rather not.

well - were you attempting to offend people with 'swastikas' - or merely explaining the word?  i suppose what i might say about the bible vs evolution or whatever disagreement comes up.

my latest self-induced argument would be between 'literalist' bible views and people who hate gardening.  you see, the bible promotes gardening - and the majority of people on earth now don't realize that airable plantable land is being vacated (for various reasons) and allowed to just turn to dust.  this is going to give a lot more power to people who control alternative ways of growing food and seeds that are hybrid.  i am offended by watermelons that don't have seeds.  i think this is extremely offensive  ;D and that all watermelons should have seeds.  in fact, i think everyone should have the chance to plant what they have eaten.  otherwise - it's just one thing grown.  what a waste.  people have to buy more.  it's all about money instead of letting people have control over the growing of their food.

to give the least offense - maybe one should have their own blog or web site.  then, it's entirely their own problem if they get people mad or not.

is this some invisible man you are beating - or is it the bench?  why the bench?  why not the couch?  you're slowing down as you near the bench.  is this some sort of threat of some kind.  i would love to be killed by a pianist.

and, why the jacket?  it seems a little bit of overkill.  you should take it off first.

ps notice how the bench keeps returning to it's spot.  this is a magic trick one can only do with a rug underneath.

That isn't opus10no2 in that photo. That is mkaykov, a member of this forum (and almost da sdc) who is better known as "trumofo" to some members.

I think my level of being offended is lessened by the internet.  I can switch away from anything pretty quick and have a lot of control over what I view.  "I" filter my internet I guess so it's not going to have much impact if it offends me.

I can be all too easily offended when I want to be.  Generally, for my overall well  being, I choose not to be easily offended. It works.

I find any kind of intolerance offensive, but especially when people are intolerant of the moustache.  And if that happens to be my moustache, then all the more so.
I highly recommend that everyone at least tries growing a moustache.  It will do wonders for your piano playing.

Something to ponder would be the fact that you and I are both 2/3 water, and the hotter we get, we will both be steam.
