Anyone who is fan of John Ogdon will want to see this.

It is filled with rare footage of the Tchaikovsky, Bartok and Liszt concertos plus Islamey and other technical showstoppers.
The 53 minute documentary also shows Ogdon playing the last four pages of the Sorabji OC and most fascinating of all, shows his process of composition as he improvises an accompaniment to the 1956 film Moby Dick.
It's also quite moving to think it was filmed only a few months before his death.

P.S.
There is also footage of Ogdon playing the Liszt Dante Sonata which has recently appeared on Youtube.
Does anyone else here think the opening of Liszt's 'Orage' (AdP - Suisse No.5) sounds like the Gymnopedie from Hell?

I wish more pianists were committed to music of their time and composition like Ogdon was. he was truly one of the best and should have been around longer.

How wonderfu, thank you. Is there anyway to download videos from that site? Or better yet, is a DVD available of this show?

Thank you very much for this video. I was looking for any Ogdon videos, but it seems that there 's nothing out there. Well, except from this.... Thanks again

I had a problem with the download button with Firefox. So if this is the case, just open the page with Internet Explorer...

I'm using Firefox also, and I was able to download it just fine. Perhaps your media plugin is outdated.

Wow.

Weird how when those "who is the best pianist of the 20th century" threads arise, John Ogdon is seldom mentioned. But, if there was ever irrefutable evidence to close the case with, then this is it!  There you have it! the greatest pianist of the 20th century was in fact John Ogdon.

neway thanks for the link

Thanks--worked fine. I see that the DVD is available from the Ogdon Foundation, but they do not ship outside of the UK.
