Help with Schumann's Concerto in a minor.
on: July 16, 2007, 06:29:28 PM
Hi,
I'm having alot of difficulty learning certain parts of Schumann's Concerto in a minor and my teacher is away and will be away for 6 weeks more.

1st movement: page 9- Passionato- Is there anyway to learn this part more easily, i've tried all sorts of methods and i'm still struggling to get it and understand it. How do I work it up to speed?

3rd movement: Is there anyway to learn the notes more efficently, I can play well when my hands are seperated but when i put them together I just get so confused.

Any other advice would be great as this is my 1st concerto...

I know this is'nt a very good version to learn with, i've ordered the proper one, waiting for it to come.

On the Passionato part, each bar has 4 sets of triplets. The 1st and 3rd sets of triplets and the 2nd and 4th sets of triplets are supposed to be played with the right hand while sustaining the melody. Use the back part of your hand to hold the melody while using the front part to play the triplets. As for the 3rd movement, the notes are very difficult to play up to speed, but the rhythm is pretty straight forward. I'll I can suggest you do is practice is over and over and over and eventually get it into your hands.

I hope I helped. Good luck  :)

Have you tried changing the meter back to 6/8 and playing block chords on each beat with the melody on the Passionato part?  That seems to be a good way to get the notes under your fingers.  Plus, since you're changing the meter and physical structure for practice you will remember it better.

I played this concerto about 7 years ago, and that section is one of my favs!

thanks you!
I'll try your advice and see if it works. Yup, this is a really beautiful part of his 1st movement, but probably the hardest.
Woah, if you learnt it about 7 yrs ago, how old are you now?
