new kitty advice

after the thrill of being gone away from the kids all day yesterday whilst visiting the king tut exhibit - i decided to spoil the five year old and go to the spca this morning.  we found a cute kitty that already had shots and would be spayed for free if we bring her back in a timely manner. 

she is a friendly little cat - but the problem is she has gotten into the recliner mechanisms twice and i'm afraid she's going to get a major squeeze if someone sits down and doesn't know she is there.  so - i've been guarding the couch and just wondering if i should return her tommorrow.  the five year old is crying about it - of course.  so i suggested maybe we get a collar and leash and tie her up for a few days so that she doesn't get into this kind of trouble.

maybe she should stay in the garage?  just unloading my elation of one day - to complete frustration the next. 

*pianowolfi is nice.  i think i'll adopt him instead.

Why not adopt Thal? More challenging, surely? (not that I am at all suggesting that he should be spayed or kept in the garage, of course)...

thal is unadoptable.  i'd have to get him his distemper shot.   seriously, i think he likes his girlfriend.  perhaps they will marry and have a child or two.  it will make a good british movie.  'the turnaround'  - man decides not every girl is like his ex-girlfriend.  loses second car and all redeemable assets.   just kidding.  perhaps she has a job.  that is probably a good indicator that she has some assets of her own.

Actually what you should have done was to take you big cat to see the new cat, then you can probably get an idea of whether they are compatible or not. Your big cat is prolly guarding its territory. That's what my dog does. She kills snakes and lizards and tries to eat other bigger dogs even though they're outside the compound.

Just a wee word of advice, though, Thal; always be careful what you do with women with large assets on an ironing board; there are several possible dangers...

hey, this is new kitty advice - not new girlfriend advice.  but, i suppose it works.  i had to literally move the ironing board (first time in years) out of it's 'slot' so she can use it as a sort of kennel pen - and then put the kitty box she came in near it.  she's been a good little kitty and slept well all night.  the other cat was pacing the floor outside and finally went out.

WOW... so many ways to interpret this... um... I think I'll leave it at that... 

I'll just say one thing: If you substitute the word "kitty" for its synonym, one interpretation of this thread would be that it IS girlfriend advice.

That behavior is very normal. The same thing happened when we introduced a new kitten to our older cat.  She hissed quite loudly, so we waited a few days and tried again--things slowly got better.

Have you given the new kitty a bath yet? Sometimes they reek of shelter/other kitties to which the older cat may be reacting.

good points!  actually, i had to return her today (and surprisingly the five year old was ok with it) because of her getting into the recliners.  we have four of them.  and on the chance she would climb up into the mechanisms and someone accidentally crunch her - i had to return her.  so sad.  she was so cute. 

i don't know if my cat would spend two weeks getting to know this cat or kill her.  she is a 'hunter' cat - and usually kills birds and rabbits quickly.  no remorse either.  she leaves them on the front porch for us to praise her about.  usually, i feel bad for the bird or bunny and wrap it up - frowning at the cat.  but, if it's a snake - that's ok. 

she's so old now -though- i thought that these 'hunting' instincts would be gone - but as i put her out she was really in the 'hunting mood.'  i think she would have torn the kitten apart if we hadn't been there holding her.  only because she was in her territory.

Wouldn't the kitty get scared and jump out of the recliner when someone sat down (and before they recline)?  We had a cat that would hide out under the car in the driveway, but as soon as the car started, she knew to get out or the way.

My neighbours cat sleeps under my car and judging by paw prints, sometimes on top of it.

Cats seem to have a nack of getting out of trouble before it actually happens.

well - anyways - you're much more talented than a cat would ever be at cycling and piano - so i guess this was just a stupid comment.  thanks for coming to visit!!  i will now associate the name with a face and personality.  and, your improv was cool to hear.  i don't think we would ever be able to name you as appropriately as 'pianowolfi' either.  probably some 'cutsie' name that you'd be stuck with for life.

ps our long-term cat has now disappeared (as of last night).  it rained.  stopped.  we let her out.  haven't seen her since.  is she mad?  she will be glad the kitty is gone.  cats are so smart.

pss she came back.  so glad that she didn't think we were replacing her (did she?).
