What levels/ grades are John Thompson IV and V
on: July 18, 2007, 10:27:20 PM
I struck out posting this on the student board so I will ask here! WHen I learned piano years ago I learned via John Thompsons and lots of extra music -- my teacher had me doing up to 15 pieces per week. Now, as I try to get back my playing I have bought the Alfred Adult 3, John Thompson 3 Velocity, Schaum Amber and Grey -- along with lots of other classical and popular books  and sheet music for enjoyment purposes.

John Thompson Easiest course 8 and Velocity 3 from the "Modern COurse" seem more difficult than Schaum. I am just trying to figure out -- without getting juried again -- what level I am "at." I can play Moonlight Sonata and Fur ELise is a breeze; Little Rhapsody in Blue is too easy and after 20 play throughs I have the "advanced intermediate" Richter Rhapsody down. My John Thompson books and the real Rhapsody are in storage.

I can sight read the intermediate "Moderns" book but do have to deconstruct them to get them right yet I am unable to play John Thompson 3 Velocity etudes in allegretto because I simply do not have the speed. Ragtime gives me fits and I can only play the Entertainer if I slow it down -- I never was very good with Ragtime....

I have the plastic spiral $25 collections of classical music and all of them are doable with practice -- Fantasie Impromptu is not yet up to speed but the notes are fine.

I assumed I was a "level 5" based on Shaum, but are these levels accurate?

I do not have Hinson or Magrath....
