Recordings of out-of-tune pianos
on: August 01, 2007, 11:35:27 AM
This is an appeal for help, of sorts....

I've developed a technique for fixing out-of-tune unisons in recordings of pianos, one of a number of 'impossible' things I've contrived to do to recordings. This was driven mainly by a particular recording of both historic and personal interest, but I'm keen to try it out on a few more. Does anyone have any suggestions of recordings (the more famous/notorious the better!) that are plagued by a hideously out-of-tune note or two? Obviously these are more likely to be live than studio recordings, but I'm perfectly happy to look at either. I know I've heard a few over the years and probably have some in my collection but can't think offhand of any serious offenders.

i think dorian griner needs your help on that one recording he posted in a church.  seems that old church pianos are notoriously out of tune.  i am sure he did not want this - and probably had the piano tuned - but they go out of tune quickly when the pins are loose - don't they?

I am wondering what is this technique and would be very interested  to know how you do it.

Some of G. Sokolov's recordings are notoriously out of tune, esp his Rachmaninov 3.

Ha, I highly doubt you could possibly fix if I record my piano. Besides the fact EVERY single note is out of tune, there are quite a few broken strings, where G3 does not play at all  8).

You could try the recordings of Les Dawson.

That's true. I could also saw my own leg off at the knee without anaesthetic but, you know, some things just don't seem to draw me....  ;)

It's a bit like playing the piano - get the appropriate tools and practise for 20 years!

Thanks for the Sokolov suggestion, Marik, and best of luck getting that piano of yours fixed!

Ash's recording of the Prok 2 apparently has an out of tune piano.

well if very few people own pianos, a piano tuner wont be able to make any money from tuning piano. If you find yourself in London i will lend you my piano, or you could rent one.

Yes, you can have a tuned piano here in London .

Yes am sure Erbil is amazing these days, thanks for the offer, if am made homeless one day i may return to Erbil,  . BTW the americanvoices sound like a friendly and excellent teaching organisation, am glad you are learning from them. Good luck with your music and piano playing, follow the straight and narrow path and you will succeed.

I was on the verge of dropping in to HMV to see if they had it and it occurred to me to wonder - concerto or sonata?

Concerto- I'm not sure if he's recorded the sonata.
I haven't heard it, but read about it in gramophone.

I find a lot of things sound weird, because they use different tuning systems in different countries. On the dvd of Richter the enigma, I remember the 2nd scherzo being totally out of tune.

Most modern pop music is totally out of tune becasue of all the electronics. So far out of tune I can't even tell what notes are what, or what key it's in. And if I try I am always a semitone sharp (after much confusion) because they are sooooo unbelieveably sharp! Maybe they've solved this now, I never listen to pop music, but when I do that always bugs me lol.

Hey what about strings? Can you fix a recording of a badly out of tune cello with a piano?

I'll donate a live recording of mine that was done on a really old out of tune Heintzman if you want.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

In the film shine the Rach 3 is almost a semi tone sharp I'm sure! I heard it but was I'm sure I must be hearing it wrong! At first I thought it was in Eb minor! And I was convinced it was semitone sharp throughout.  umm surely not! I'll listen again when I'm not so tired. Anyone else thought this? Or are my ears well and truely screwed?
