Searching around, there hasn't been much discussion of this piece over the years here. I discovered it a few weeks ago and completely fell for it. Does anyone else love (or not love) this work? I'm just starting to work on it, and it seems to have some pretty tricky spots in the Prelude.
I have access to several recordings of this (about six). The Prelude either comes in at about 3:30 or 4:00. I actually prefer the slower 4:00 recordings; the tempo on my Prelude score is marked Non Allegro, and I just prefer the slower tempo probably because you get to hear more detail. My favorite recording that I've found is by Alexander Gindin, although he does take the Gavotte too slow for me.
Is this work played often? I was unfamiliar with it until just recently, and my teacher who has a doctorate wasn't familiar with it when I was talking to him about my program selections.
Best,
Steve
P.S. To furtwaengler, cmg, and Amelia: My teacher recommeded that I go with the Bach and Rachmaninov first half based on where I am and my "strenghts as a pianist" as he put it. He knows my playing well, and so I'm going to trust his judgement. I'll save the Bach/Liszt half for the next program (hopefully). Your thoughts and help were definitely appreciated!
