Scarlatti - which to prescribe?
on: March 28, 2004, 11:27:45 PM
Recommendations with comments on technical difficulties (general and specific) and approaches to these would be nice. Fingeringsd, types of finger, wrist (forearm), rotation movements, etc.

I love 141, how might u finger the repeated notes?

With 555 sonatas to describe I feel tired only in thinking about answering... :P

However, I answered it in another thread (I like to keep things organised). I discuss 41 of may favourite sonatas, have a look:

Hi Bernard,
The thread you mentionned in your above messsge seems to be no longer available. I'm sure I'm not the only one interested in your discussion of 41 of your favorite Scarlatti sonatas. Would there be any chance you could re-edit the thread in question or at least parts of it.
Thanks in advance.
Faithful reader,
Béryl

Scarlatti wrote 555 sonatas? Wow, and I thought Beethoven's 32 was a lot.

Bernhard probably has more threads on Scarlatti, but until he replies here are two of the really big lists.

His first "What about Scarlatti thread."

Here's more. This is a thread about Hanon, so scroll down for the post on Scarlatti.

And here's a collection of Scarlatti Sonata MIDIs

The website moderator, Nils, has mentioned that he's working on a fix for these broken links.  An ambitious and daunting task.

Thank you Notturno for your quick reply ! I have investigated the threads you mentioned and been to the the site that has a collection of midi files. Thank you !

I am looking forward to the fruits of the labors of website monitor Nils. I'm sure we would all be grateful for his repairing the broken links that are often cited in various threads. I address him all my encouragement !

all my life, i have been switching fingers on repeated notes.  but, from my  jullliard trained teacher came the response - why don't you play the same finger?  this stumped me because i always heard that if you did that, you might not have as much control and some notes may not sound.  but, he suggested started at the end of the white note that i had to repeat and gradually moving inward whilst using the same finger (forget which finger, but i think 2 or 3 on K 119).  anyway, it worked  like a charm and now with scarlatti, i don't bother to change fingers always.  kind of depends on what notes come before and after, too.

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
