What other music do you like?
on: August 12, 2007, 10:40:31 AM
Aside from music written for piano, 'classical' (in the broad, non-specific sense of the term) and so on...what kind of stuff do you listen to?

I listen occasionally to pop music. Like Shania Twain, Kylie Minogue (though this has been a while already), sometimes I get addicted to a song students want to play, like recently to "unfaithful" by Rihanna. I like Queen, and the Beatles of course. Sometimes Jazz.

you don't say!  (mildly compares blue car to bluegrass.  yes.  it fits.  only room for a banjo).

i have to listen to pop/rock when my daughter is in the car.  she is so persistent about changing my classic station.  i just get her by turning the radio down at stoplights.  i used to listen to countrywestern when i was really stressed out - but lately, it's the gospel stations.

Well, as for me, I like a bit of all sorts. Jazz, lots of different types of rock, pop songs when they're good (Amy Winehouse, Beyonce's earlier solo stuff, The Beach Boys, for example), etc. I am a big Mike Patton fan and follow a lot of stuff that he and other ex-members of Mr Bungle get up to, Estradasphere...also people like Amon Tobin and so on, The Beatles of course...well I'm no going to list every band/artist I like but I tend to invest more energy into experimental stuff (not necessarily weird or unlistenable, just stuff that I find to be a bit different from the norm), and jazz, and enjoy more 'mainstream' stuff perhaps more casually because 1) it tends to get more airplay so i don't have to worry about buying it and 2) it's music I would categorise as 'emotion' music rather than 'thinking' music...ok that sounds incredibly snobby and reductive, but I don't necessarily value one more than the other, they just serve different purposes to me. It's hard to explain haha

oh and queen :) another band I've heard so many times I don't own a single album of theirs but I know the lyrics to most of their 'hits' pretty much off by heart

Key word - "watch"

I had an english professor who once said, "Rap lyrics are primarily made of assonance... rap vids, on the other hand, generally consist of ass."

I have found in recent years that I can genuinely enjoy any kind of music for what it is, and sometimes am in a mood for almost every kind of music you can imagine.

HOWEVER

I know what I like.

It pretty much boils down to intense Romantic piano music, and melodic death metal and some power metal.

I listen to some rock - although mostly the bands who were about between the 50s-mid 80s. The Beatles, Roy Orbison, Queen, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd... favourite current band are Mostly Autumn, similar in style to Floyd, finally starting to get success, although whether supporting Bryan Adams on tour this summer is a success is a question of opinion...

Also like British folk music, highly underrated stuff. Waking the Witch are one of the best up and coming bands in this area, going to see them live in September, should be good. Am cursing I can't go see Eliza Carthy when she's playing in September - I already had tickets for the ballet when I found she was playing locally. It's a hard life...

I like a pretty diverse field of music, randomly.  Andromeda, Suicidal Tendencies, Dream Theater, Slayer, Marilyn Manson, Ritchie Blackmore's "Rainbow", Judas Priest, Grooverider, Franz Ferdinand, The Arcade Fire, Van Halen, Art Tatum, Skinny Puppy, Eat Static, Juno Reactor, Frank Zappa, King Crimson, Dave Brubeck, The Police, Children of Bodom, Megadeth, Aerosmith... list goes on  :P

It's weird, whenever I find an obscure band that I like (Franz Ferdinand, Arcade Fire, Dream Theater) a year or two later suddenly they're huge sensations!  Maybe I should be a talent scout or something.  Probably pays better than anything in the classical field  >:(

You bet it does! - or rather would; good luck! You might eventually end up able to purchase all the Sorabji scores you want out of pocket change...

That's enough to make anyone stressed out, is it not?

but lately, it's the gospel stations.
That'd be enough to cause paroxysms in some...

I think that we'd need to be clearer than the thread title makes it as to what is meant by "other" in this context - in the sense of "other" than what? If simply "other" than piano music, then there's plenty, of course; if the net of "other"ness is cast rather narrower than this, then let's see what its scope is first!

You know something, I was sure(99%) that you would answer that :P

By other I think it means music not belonging to the western tradition of classical music. That be Palestrina or Elliot Carter or anyone else fitting into the therm western classical music.

Metallica, Slayer, Black Sabbath...I just saw Ozzy perform with Zakk Wylde on Friday night, actually.

I also enjoy Dr. Dre's Chronic 2001 and jazz like Chick Corea, Coltrane, Brecker, and Bill Evans.

Well, that shows some perception and understanding on your part, then, does it not?!

I had suspected that this was indeed the intended meaning but didn't want to give my two cents' worth (if it is even that much) about it before being reasonably certain. The answer is not a great deal, really - yes, some jazz (Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, etc.), but not a whole lot else and even the jazz in relatively small doses - but then the very fact of your mentioning Palestrina and Elliott(sp.) Carter in your response is itself illustrative of the vast range of music that does fit into that western art-music category, so I'm hardly restricting my listening...

Jazz, jazz and jazz, possibly even jazz.
Klezmer bands are pretty nice.
Finnish (plus Scandinavian/Icelandic) folk music - plus bands like Värttinä.
And the classics like Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull etc.
Shakuhachi is also great... but that does require some specific environment, which isn't always available. Plus, Shakuhachi players are quite rare in these parts of the world.
James Brown.

Lots of other stuff, but just occasionally.

well, i did specify somewhat in the actual thread, i know I was fairly vague still then but it's hard to be specific :p but I think it's fair to assume that most people on this board are interested in music composed specifically for piano, and 'classical' music...so yeah anything other than that really, just what kind of music do you listen to on a daily basis
