Music for 4yo brother?
on: April 01, 2004, 12:34:02 AM
I have a 4 year old brother who I would like to start introducing to the world of music.  Since I am living at home while in college I will see him every day.  What can I do for him at his age that will get him started on music and music making.  I'm not trying to turn him into another Mozart or anything, just thought it would be a good way to spend some time with him while teaching him some fun and useful stuff.  Any suggestions as to what and how to start?

Does your brother enjoy hearing you play? Does he already show an interest in music? Four years old is not to young to start lessons, if there is a desire and interest. You could start by allowing him to sit with you and play pieces that he may enjoy. I know when I was just....I guess since I was born probably, my Mother would play the piano for my brother and I. When have tapes of when we were 2 and 3 (brother 2 years older), and she would be playing Puff the Magic Dragon, A'B'C's, etc...lots of childrens songs, as well as simple classical. We used to just love to sing and march around.
(sounds funny I know, but hey, when your 2 and 3)!
Anyway, I would suggest playing pieces he may be interested in, you could encourage him to sing along, possibly teach him something that has 1 or 2 finger accompaniment.  I'm sure your little brother will not only enjoy learning more about music, but will cherish the time he spends with his big sister!

Shag :)
