Piano or Porsche?
on: September 14, 2007, 06:41:57 PM
I have asked several of my excellent pianist friends, "if you had $60,000 would you buy a piano or a porsche?"  I expected them all to say 'piano' without question, but I was astounded by how many of them said they'd buy the porsche.

So, who here would buy what and why?

A Steinway B for sure. Though 60,000 might not be enough then, at least not for a new one. But I anyway prefer the older ones. Two days ago I tried a model "O" for something like $40,000  :o Not enough bass....well it will be revised... but still not enough bass...I love the tone though, it's very sensitive. But I would have to pay by installments  :-\ for many years...

Steinway Grand for sure.

I don't need to buy a Porsche, you can steal a Porsche, but you definitely can't steal a Steinway.

Porsche, I don't see the added benefit of a $60k Steinway. Maybe if it was like $100k++ But I don't really need a car though... Better save the money for something else like MOVING OUT OF MY PARENT'S HOUSE maybe...
That's the price you pay for being moderate in everything.  See, if I were you, my name would be Ilovepie.  But that's just me.

A car can only get you from A to B. A piano can take you to an infinity of different places, if you're willing to go there. I'd say that's a much more worthwhile investment than a fancy car.

I don't see the point of spoiling myself with a great piano when all it'll really do is make me disappointed in every bad piano I'll end up performing on.

Porsches, on the other hand, don't have enough room in the backseat for dirty deeds. I will stick with a BMW E39M5.

I would take the piano. I had a Porsche a few years back and was not impressed. I was even less impressed with the £170 an hour labour charge levied by the Porsche dealer.

$60,000 is not really going to get you a good one anway.

Multiply by 3 and you could get a nice Audi R8. My brother brought one home a couple of weeks back and i have still not recovered.

So i go for the piano ^^

Corvettes are WAAAYYY better than Porsches.  Look up consumer satisfaction, it shows very clearly there.  I don't know why anyone drives a porsche when they could have a corvette.

Of course piano. Probably a well tuned steinway B or something, or maybe a brand new Yamaha C3. Possibly a really high tech digital piano, too. Not sure. But not a car. What would I do with a fancy car? Cars just get you from A to B. spending more on a car is only for status/image, and I don't consider those even remotely valuable beyond attaining enough status (where status=financial gain in a job) to support a family.

I wouldn't buy a $60,000 porsche.  Any porsche for 60k is going to be crap.  If you're going to drive a porsche you need this one:

But either way, no car is a car when you compare it to this:

Other cars are just slow piles of metal.

I can see the Porsche Jose Carreras fine but not the Luciano Bugatti; the latter picture displays only abit of sky at the top and the rest is blank. Not sure if that's down to my computer or something else...

Soliloquy, I have test-driven a Boxster and it was the most beautiful experience--they are not crap, trust me.  Go drive one.  Just dress nice and go on a weekday in the morning.

The Porsche you chose here is so amazing it's my favorite one but costs half a million dollars.  Bugatti is a *little* faster, but not as pretty IMO.

Isn't it crazy to think that it would take EIGHT of those Porsches or four Bugattis to pay for a golden  era Stradivarius violin?

The Bugatti's price tag is at $1.44mil atm actually, and the GT's is down to about 450k, so the math might have to be tweaked a bit.  Anyway, the Bugatti is a LOT faster than the Porsche.  Veyron figures underlined.

Zero to 60 mph (97 km/h): 2.46" - 3.6"
Zero to 100 mph (161 km/h): 5.5" - 7.0"
Zero to 150 mph (241 km/h): 9.8" - 16.2"
Zero to 200 mph (322 km/h): 24.2" - 51.6"
Zero to 250 mph (402 km/h): 55" - N/A
Top Speed: 253mph -  205 mph
Horsepower: 1001bhp - 612bhp

Anyway the only car that can compete with the Bugatti at the moment is the Koenigsegg CCRX, which hasn't come out yet.  It's also very pretty:

It actually beats the Veyron in 0-60, and it's a hybrid.  1064bhp :P

For some reason I am not into shape of sport cars. I will concur though, the E39M5 is quite a car. Even a smaller M3 is a beast... and it has a nice classic shape.

If I had spare $60.000 I'd actually spend it for neither piano or car, but put a down payment for a nice property. I just don't see a good reason of investing $60.000 into a car, when in a year or two its value will be about half down.

I have a BMW635csi, which in 1985 was sold for $52.000. I bought it a couple years ago for $2000. Mind you, it had less than 100K on the engine, still puts to shame all those cars out there, and has a beautiful classic shape--they don't do anything like this anymore.
On the other hand, properties which were $60.000 in 1985 at least tripled their value.

As far as piano concerned, I bought a second hand "Anton Richter" baby grand 3 years ago, made it regulated the way I need, and more than happy with that. I don't really understand why should I buy anything inferior to Steinway D (like O, L, M), which any way would not be a "real thing".
I don't really care what to practice on. Whenever I want to play a good instrument I just play a concert  ;).

Wow - ain't this forum a big tent!!!  seems like quite a few car cognoscenti lurk around here.  Hey, I don't knock it one bit.  A Mazda RX-8 currently occupies my driveway - soon it will get a quad-rotor engine with 770 h.p. and 700 ft/lb torque measured at the rear wheels! -  then I'm going to hunt down porsches and corvettes.  ;D ;D ;D

I saw this tricked-out rx-8 model at a car show and did the same to mine:

https://www.supercars.dk/images/products/mazda-rx8-supercar.jpg

Yes, the Audi RS-8 is a great car.  Bugatti?  nice engine but butt ugly exterior - the same goes for the Koenigsegg.  The Lamborghini Murcielago has a fantastic engine and an *edgy* exterior - a true weapon!!!

Cheers.

Hi Thal,

Fear not dear sir - I have ceramic-carbon brakes, dual coil-over-shock assemblies at every wheel,  titanium transverse crossbeam in engine bay, new rear-end and differential plus a racing clutch assembly.  She's all set for the addition - best of all: she'll still have a 50/50 front-rear weight distribution.  Oh, there won't be any turbos and no ugly bulges on the hood.  The secret is in the fuel injection, ignition, and porting/polishing  processes.   And she'll sing at 11000 rpm with a rev limiter that cuts in at 11500 rpm.   Yes, I won't unnecessarily be calling attention to the car with a loud exhaust - thats so lame.  Found an aftermarket exhaust which is quieter than the stock set-up and no back-pressure whatsoever.  The engine sound is more turbine whine than formula one howl.

Cheers,

B&R

Btw Thal - Imagine if the V12 turbodiesel in Audi's Le Mans car made it into the RS-8?  That would certainly be one heck of a ride.  ;D ;D ;D

I would get the piano, the one we have at the moment is so old and crap, that when the piano tuner came he said that he couldn't tune it properly, he could just tune it to itself, otherwise the strings would break. It does make a nice sound though, even if it is a semitone off...

As for a car, well, I don't know much about cars, so all it needs to be able to do is work and look vaguely nice. To the person (I forget who) that said that all the car needs is a CD player, brakes, and an engine. What about steering? If I had to choose between brakes and steering...I would rather just steer myself out of trouble than go nowhere.

On another note, all of the car pictures posted so far look really cool. Except maybe the Beetle.

I dream of having $60,000 for my very own grand piano.  My dad has a Porsche.  Although it's a '65.  Not very new.  And it eventually goes to the eldest son.  Unfortunately, I am the youngest daughter...

Piano tuning, maintenance, etc. for me is roughly $120 every two or three months.

Car maintenance, gas, etc. must be much more than that.  At least $120 every two or three tanks.
