Yamaha DGX620 - technical questions
on: September 17, 2007, 08:44:02 PM
I need help! Would someone please help me understand all this technical stuff. I have an accoustic piano which I love and will continue to use 99% of the time. I teach and I am working towards my teaching degree. I know absolutely nothing about digital pianos or computers for that matter. I would like to buy the Yamaha DGX620 for myself when I get the urge to fool around on the piano but everyone's sleeping so obviously digital is the way to go (headsets). But the main reason I'm buying it is for my 9 year old son who has shown an interest in digital pianos due to the many voices available and the recording functions. He'd like to compose his own music and get them onto a CD. He's just a beginner piano player (grade one RCM) though and won't be creating any masterpieces yet but I want to make this creative outlet available to him. This digital piano has everything we both need from it but there are some things I don't understand. Can someone please help.
What is MIDI?
It has GM, XF, XGlight - what are we missing from XG? Do we need it for our use?
In regards to tone generating technology what is AWM?
I'm not sure I completely understand polyphony, is 32 going to be enough for us - can you please explain in your own words?
Does anyone use this machine? Your opinions please.
In the future if my son and who knows maybe even me are more seriously involved with this whole digital world we'll look into a more serious set up, but for now I think this is perfect for us. Any opinions or advice would be much appreciated!
THANKS

Have you tried asking the same question or doing a Search for DGX620 here:
https://www.pianoworld.com/ubb/ubb/ultimatebb.php?/forum/6.html
They have an almost incessant discussion going on there about DP's.
Try wikipedia for MIDI info.

Hi!!!
I have the Yamaha DGX620, that was my first dig piano, actually was my first piano at all cuz that is what i can afford at that time, seriusly if you are a acustic piano player, go for a "digital piano" what do i mean with digital piano, any piano that have the sound polyphony above 64+
What does polyphony mean, you can only have 32 notes at the same time, if you play more than 32 the piano wont register all the notes.
I love my dig piano, but i use it to practice at nights cuz yeah you can use the headset but i notice the polyphony when im playing with the damper.
Seriusly the yamaha have a lot of features and the sound is crisp. but i rather prefer the KORG 250 or The KORG 500 because is a Digital piano, dont have a lot of fancy sounds but have 64+ of polyphony.

What is MIDI?
MIDI (musical instrument direct interface) is a standard, where the music is transmitted and recorded not as an audio signal, but as a package of digital data codes, which give information about diferent parameters of the tone--pitch, volume intensity, etc.
