Simple question about levels
on: September 21, 2007, 08:58:12 PM
Hello

I wonder how to interprete those levels. For example, this is level 2

When am I level 2  ???
Can this be like the number of years you play piano? I play 1 year now, I practiced this piece for weeks now .. sure I can play the notes, but I want to play it perfectly in rhythm, with all musical details and colors, and with a joyful speed ... and I just can't, my fingers are too slow, unexperienced.
For an idea of what I did in the past year: Denes Agay with "The joy of first year piano", I started practicing scales with both hands, started some simple studies and now started Czerny Opus 849 "30 etudes de mecanisme". All is going fairly well, had a good exam and good grades. Am I level 2 now ?  :-\
Hehe this post sounds ridiculous but was just wondering.

Rating the difficulty of a piece is not an exact science, don't get hung up on levels - it's just a guess.  It's better to put more stock on how much of a challenge it is for you. Everybody has different backgrounds, strengths and weaknesses anyways.

It sounds like this piece might be a bit out of your reach for now.  If you've been working on it for weeks and can't get it to your satisfaction, you're probably getting a little burned out with this one.  That's nothing to worry about (personally if I'm able to get a piece sounding 'just right' after a few weeks I feel it wasn't enough of a challenge ;)), it's all part of the learning process.

Of course I may be wrong, I'm reading between the lines here.

My advice would be to pick an aspect that you feel you're weak with and focus on that for a while.  You mentioned rhythm and speed a few times, maybe that would be a good area to work on?

Don't worry, those levels mean nothing. It's just like rating them on a scale of hardness 1 to 10. I have played that song before and I would personally rate it a 1, it is very easy.

It's also a matter of how long you have been playing as to how easy they are.

When I had only just started piano lessons again after teaching myself for 5 years, my classroom music teacher gave me Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C# minor. At the time I woud have rated it about a 10/10 on the difficulty scale, but now I would only give it about a 7. It's not that I have played the piece and got better at it, but I'm in a much better position to analyse how difficult a piece is, and it isn't actually that hard.

Having said that, I'm still not past playing only the right hand by itself. I think it sounds cool like that though.

Hey that's good for my motivation  :-X

The piece and notes are quite simple ...
but not if you want to play it as pro as the sample mp3, at least not for me

I would, but I'm afraid my equipment doesn't work anymore. Still searching for a new microphone!

Piano Street Magazine:
Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
