PIANO DUEL!!
on: October 04, 2007, 12:33:21 PM
hey all

i'd like to challenge someone to a duel to give my practising a little more direction and urgency. i have quite a few half-learned pieces, and others which i want to learn from scratch. the pieces i was thinking about are:

chopin: 'winter wind' etude (op.25 no.11)
macdowell: hexentanz (op.17)
brahms: ballade (op.118 no.3)
mozart: sonata in b flat (k570)
schubert/liszt: standchen (from schwanengesang)
rachmaninov: prelude in g# minor (op.32 no.12)

if anyone is interested in duelling one or more of these pieces then let me know. i can also send pdf files of the sheet music if anyone needs them. i was thinking about a time frame of 2-3 weeks.

Hey Edd, I'd go for a duel on op.25/11 - I also have it "half-learned" and could need some additional motivation. Shall we say Nov. 1, or do you prefer an earlier defeat? ;)

nov 1st sounds good- it should give me plenty of time to get it up to scratch (and no room for excuses!) i have a lot of work to do on it. i can currently crawl through all the notes, but the only bits that i have sounding decent are the opening and the coda. how about you? and do you have any other recordings on here? i'd like to know what i'm up against!

also....... how about adding one more piece to make it a double duel. i'll let you decide, but something contrasting would be nice. maybe something that doesn't tax the right hand so much? ;-)

Similar with me, I can play through, but not at speed and I haven't really worked out the interpretation yet. So let's have a good time until Nov 1. And: No excuses! In case I don't post something, I promise to send a bottle of regional (Swiss) beer to the place where you live...

Btw, I watched your Youtube videos -- congrats for playing op.9/1 so nicely despite all the distraction  :)  Some of my recordings are here. I have never recorded video but want to try it, so I suggest having a video duel. Ok? It's more fun anyway...

op.10/12, what do you think?  :) I'm also polishing this one at the moment. Just an idea...

Good luck for Nov. 1!

P.S. I may have a secret weapon: will try to get pianowolfi on board as a master consultant, he lives quite close. One danger I see is that he would try to turn this into an improvisation duel, which I would inevitably lose....  ;)

i'm not sure i'd describe chopin's 10/12 as a "contrasting" piece  ;) (not to mention the fact that i've never looked at it, so nov 1st might be a bit of a rush to get it all learned and polished).

i was kind of thinking about something that brings out a whole different set of skills, maybe something slow and/or something classical (and hopefully not as difficult as 25/11!)

but whatever you pick i'll have a go at. so pick wisely....

I'm really trying to focus on the etudes for the next year or so, which will limit the choice a bit. So the most "contrasting" pieces I could suggest would be the slower etudes, op.10/3, op.10/6, or op.25/7, or maybe also op.25/1. Would you enjoy one of those? Otherwise, let's simply stick with op.25/11! Maybe good for you, looks like you have other duels coming up... ;D

Hi :) I'm ready to post my contribution in the audition room. But I don't want to be the first who posts since I assume that I am in a time zone which is ahead of both of you. Let me know when we start the duel. :) *chomps at the bit* ;D

According to your 'website' you've been learning that prelude for 6 months, while the others have had a couple of weeks...
