Is a Kawai CA71 a good sub for a Kawai K-2?
on: October 12, 2007, 07:21:48 PM
I’ve been reading this forum and others for several weeks now while I research various digital piano verses acoustic piano options. I’ve narrowed down my choices to a digital Kawai CA71 (floor demo model for $2699 US) or a acoustic Kawai K-2 ( to be sold soon at a discount store for $3899 US). In talking with the dealer he thinks the K-2 would be a good match for my son (seven years old) until he has played for maybe 8 to 12 years. At that time, if he keeps at it, his ability might require a better piano. I am thinking that the CA71 would be a good match for his skill for about the same length of time. I’m sure my son would enjoy the digital voices and built in lessons, etc of the CA71 at his age. I would also enjoy the lower price of the digital. My question for all of you experienced piano players is how many years of study would a typical piano student need before he would outgrow a K-2? I’ve played both the K-2 and the CA91 (they didn’t have a CA71 on the floor). I think the CA71 would be great for a good number of years. I would much rather pay the lesser amount now since I would have to get a new piano later any way. I would value any of your opinions on this.

Kids tend to just fiddle around on electric keyboards. On a real piano they've got to learn to play properly to get anything out of it!

I somewhat agree. With an acoustic, when he would play, he would always be playing a real piano. No way around that. With a digital, he could goof off with the sounds, etc, if he wanted. I don't too much mind that, if he is doing it "musically". Actually my son has been taking lessons for a little over a year. First, group lessons on a digital piano, now private lessons on an acoustic. We have an old Technics digital at home that we need to update, which is why I'm asking. He practices very well at home with my supervision and does not just "play around" at it. He is enjoying himself, which is why we are continuing the lessons.
