I hate analogies
on: October 13, 2007, 07:04:58 PM
I took the GRE today. Some of those analogies make no sense at all. Here are some analogies for you to enjoy (patterned after the GRE, but of course not actually on the GRE since I signed something saying I wouldn't reproduce test questions). I'll start with 4 analogies.
I'll even give you multiple choice.
1. Vegetables : Carpet
a. Flashlight : Slippers
b. Blanket : Minivan
c. Mud : Guru
d. Cabinet : Telephone
2. Video Game : Sunflowers
a. Pianostreet : Stockings
b. Front porch : Lead poisoning
c. Tooth decay : rubber
d. Shampoo : ladder
3. Bread : vacuum
a. Chicken : power tools
b. hairbows : statues
c. raindrops : puppies
d. Cannot be determined from the information given
4. Geometry : sweatshirt
a. smile : rainforest
b. mp3 player : Mountain dew
c. Gold watch : depression
d. Lawn chair :make-up

I don't know what you're complaining about. Those analogies make perfect sense.
The answers are obvious.
1 is c, because you clean vegetables off the carpet, and you clean mud off a Guru.
2 is d because you use video games indoors and sunflowers outdoors, and you use shampoo indoors and ladders outdoors.
3. cannot be determined from the information given. The relationship is not clear--you can eat bread while you vacuum, and you can eat chicken while you use power tools. But you can also vacuum up bread, and pull apart chickens with power tools. So if you use the second option on the first option, then that would open up option B as a possible correct answer, because you can put hairbows on statues.
4. is d. You wear a sweatshirt while you do geometry, and you wear makeup while you sit in a lawnchair.
Does this help?

There is certainly an art for taking seemingly unrelated ideas and relating/comparing them.

I'm not smart enough to make sense of analogies.
I just look at them and go "wha???"
