Classical Star on the BBC - the way forward?
on: October 30, 2007, 09:07:13 PM
I'm watching the 3rd episode now, very enjoyable stuff.

This show decides to focus on many extra-musical factors, the important things many people ignore until the last moment when they want to be a succesful star on the concert scene.

If Danni Minogue was on it, i would watch it.

As it is, i cannot be arsed to see classical music treated in the same fashion as pop music.
I can only judge by the trailers as i have yet to see an episode.

It focusses on the things that classical musicians leave neglected.

Without changing the music at all, making competitions where the charismatic and entertaining people win.

Be it for better or for worse, music isn't the only thing that drives any music business.

It's not quite that bad. When you consider that those other programs aren't about musicians anyway, they are about singers, it becomes even less similar imo.

It's a bunch of grade 8+ teens playing their instruments.

Most of them are fairly intelligent and are into playing classical music on their chosen instrument, practising and so on. If there's any emotion, it appears genuine and not
that exploitative.

So they aren't all 'Oh my god! Oh my god! It's like totally what I wanted to do all my life Simon. Oh My god! Oh My GOD! Please put me through!! I'll like practise all day and stuff, I really really want to meet chopin you know, I've got all his records' and all that nonsense.

Plus there were no deliberately bad auditions / folk with mental heath problems for everyone to laugh at.

Although there's not enough of the music in the program for my liking. It's been done so low budget, so you don't get that 2nd 'behind the scenes / interviews / extras' programme that these reality things usually have. Usually they are bad, but in this case would probably be interesting because it could be full of music and talking to half intelligent people rather than 'Oh my god, Please vote for me because I'm like totally doing this for my cat who died last week and I've only got one shoe and <start crying> '

I just can't see some of the instruments being used selling CDs...and the judge that sells CDs for a living has more or less said that of one of the contestants, so it's clear she can't win, no matter how well she plays.

Which, given the fact they [stupidly in one case because she was probably the best and there must have been some politics there or something] got rid of the 2 violinists, pretty much makes who will win obvious.

Such a program can be a great help if you want to sell some cd's you were planning to make, but after a month or 2 everybody will have forgotten you unless you spend shitloads of time getting better and making new high quality cd's.
So its helpfull for some quick cash and some short popularity, but if you sit back its of no long range use.

Thank you, I'll tell her you said that! >:( :-\
I think a lot of purists will have problems with the show and a lot are already saying it's a classical xfactor.  Unfortunately nearly all form's of entertainment is fashioned on an image and they are looking for that to an extent but I don't believe they have degraded the music (although I would like to more of it)and I think the program is entertaining.
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.
