phykell, nice to finally see the piano in it's home territory. It turned out great!
Just beautiful.

As for me, I have a satin ebony 1901 Steinway A 6'1" rebuilt in 2003.

Love it ! :-*

Now that is a beautiful piano!

I have a Steinway L that's a couple of years old and Young Chang PG213 that I may switch out for something a bit more grand in a year or two when my daughter gets a little older.

Whoo! Just bought a beautiful cherrywood Kawai upright 606! ;D
It arrives a week from 12/30 ~ a nice present for New Year! ^o^

BIG improvement compared to my big ol' Thompson 1912  ;)

Of course, I'll be taking pictures XD

Yamaha A1 baby grand (149cm). Compared to its size it is a truly great (and affordable ;D) piano. I'm fairly happy with it :)

Here's a photo of a Schiedmayer identical to mine, for sale in a piano shop in Stuttgart.  Note Art Nouveau music desk.  Cute, huh.  Yeah, and only 85 keys, 2 pedals:

I've just been really lazy about taking photos myself.  And here's the pretty part of the plate:

J. & P. Schiedmayer was a premier German maker before WWII.

Currently 3 pianos:

1) Yamaha CLP-970 digital which I need for late practices using the headphones
2) Yamaha U1 48" polished ebony upright - wonderful piano, just beautiful, and about a year old
3) Fandrich & Sons 6'1" satin finished ebony grand. Wonderful smooth touch!

Because I bought a grand, now I have to sell my Yamaha U1, but I'm sure I'll have no trouble since it's practically new, I'm the only owner, and it's not a grey market U1

I have 2 Yamahas:
an upright (C113T) - it's old and it's action is dying. I'm sure it used to be very good, but I don't really remember. I haven't been playing it regularly since we got the grand 8 years ago. And I don't think 8 year old kids really care if repeated notes come out clear or not...

and a grand (G2) - I love this piano. It's better than my teacher's (she doesn't treat her's very well...) and I like it's reliability. It's not amazing with a beautiful sound like the C6 in a performance hall, but it's purely a piano sound... funny thing is that we bought it because we needed a grand so my sister could play a prepared piano piece.

We've never considered any European brands, though I wish we did. It's just that there's only one dealer who carries those pianos in Calgary, and she's a crook.

I have a 31 year old Kimball upright.  The sound has always been good throughout the entire range unlike many uprights which sound thin in the upper ranges.  The action has become slow over the years.  I also have a Yamaha digital at my office.  This is where I start learning most new music as I can be in and out working on fingering and such during the whole day.  I hope to get a new piano in the next 7 years as I reach retirement age.  James.

Action, Touch, Petrof and Yamaha (it was: what piano do you have?)
Reply #115 on: October 16, 2006, 06:44:39 PM

Petrof V at home - Yamaha C3 at rehearsals.

I have a Yamaha G1 Grand that I am delighted with. The only thing that is a bit annoying is that the light touch prevents me from being able to adapt very well to other pianos. I would love to have a Steinway & Sons, or a Fazioli. I would love to try a Fazioli one day.

Mmmh. Is it touch or is it action? Some posted that Yamaha has heavy action, you say it has a light touch. What's the difference? And who is right? From a piano technician I understood recently (revelation!) that you can get a piano to sound as soft as you want, but it seems to me that this affects the touch, not the action.

My Petrof grand Model V has ivory keys, so it is older than 1960, but I do not know how old. I bought it in 1986. I love its looks, but I was never happy with the sound that much, though it probably comes from the fact that it was already old when I bought it and it was never well kept. It sounds uneven and it seems not to stay tuned. I found the action/touch always really heavy: this, however, enabled me to play on whatever piano after practicing on it. And adjusting to other pianos matters to me a lot.

Every week at rehearsals I play a Yamaha C3. I have been practicing on this piano quite a lot in the last year and not on the Petrof because I split up and the Petrof is still at my ex's place. The action of the Yamaha is irritatingly light, the trebles are shrill, the overall feel far too brilliant - almost as plastified as the keys. We got it restored recently: it was a kind of Boolean machine, you know, you could play either forte or piano and that was it. Now it is much better, smoother and much more expressive. But its personality did not change.

The Petrof is old, but its trebles sound much nicer, the action I prefer, and perhaps after restoration it's gonna be quite nice sounding if it ever was.

Now: I am considering buying a Yamaha Silent Grand and sell the Petrof because of my neighbours (I posted recently on this). But now I am wondering whether it does not feel a little like trading a piece of history for some plastic. And the fact that it's gonna be light worries me. I take the action does not change from piano to piano of the same maker.

Or do Silent Petrofs exist?

I've got a Fazioli 228. My dad used to have a 308, but cashed it in for the 228 because he needed the room. Dayum I really wish I could've played on it, or atleast have the recollection of playing on it if I did already...

I'll get a photo up soon of my Fats,

that's really big.  and, i see you keep the lid down.  and, no wonky pics on the wall.  cool.

ps  i could live with any one of these pianos on this forum.  pianoguys two pianos are nice and wow that rosewood piano is cool.  also, the scheidmeyer or whatever it was - i loved the music stand!

i have a kawaii UST7.  it's a studio upright and has worked well for practice.  now i want a grand piano.  i hear that this weekend at the kimmel center in philly, the steinway company is having a special sale of all kinds of beautiful steinways.  have to look up the ad.

Yep! My dad designed it himself: the case, the functions and how he wanted it done, but the nitty gritty detailed parts like how the boards are designed and put together etc he left to some professionals to do. He's regularly voicing it and finding problems with the whole hall setup, especially with the Laris, the software/hardware (I don't know which) that controls the reverb. You can make it sound like a huge cathedral whilst playing on the organ, or sound like a really small place whilst playing the piano, and he's constantly adjusting it during performances to make it sound just right.

I just came back from having some fun improvising with alternating hands, octaves in the left and chords in the right: my arms are killing me! lol

Hmmmm.......I had a Baldwin Studio upright for the longest time. I finally got serious with learning music, so I decided to improve the piano. I gave the Baldwin to my sister in law because she wants to learn, and this past March, I bought a Yamaha C3 !  A Steinway grand is what I really wanted, but I had to find a compromise due to budget constraints.  A Steinway K52 was out of the question---affordable---but I watned the action of a grand.   I'm very happy with the Yamaha.

I have taken delivery of a Yamaha S6 today. After travelling 150 miles in a removal van it is somehwat out of tune ( but not disatrously so). Can't wait for the tuner to arrive and get it properly set up.

Previously I had a Boston 196 (6 foot 4) for 11 years. This was a nice piano - warm in the bass and mid range but lacking in sustain in the treble. My biggest grumble with the Boston was tuning instability. It seemed to be very weather sensitive, the upper register going slightly sharp and the mid/low going slightly flat. When it was new I had it preped and set up by Steinway's (London) top technician. It sounded really good and held its stablity for a year! No other tuner has been able to match him (he is now retired).

Anyway, I managed to get a good part-exchange price for the Boston and purchased the YS6 having fallen in love with it alsmot immediately. Nice action, and a more mellow tone than the C range. I have spent all evening playing it and I am impressed with how easy it is to produce a good gradual crescendo or dim which was not so easy on the Boston.
The S6 was preowned for just 6 months and has a more recent serial number than the brand new one in the store. This means that I saved quite a lot of money by not having to pay VAT. All in all it cost me just £13k including removal. When trying it in the shop there was a very nice Steinway B (Hamburg) next to it - 1970's vintage. Whilst being perhaps better that the Yamaha I did not think that it was worth triple the price (and anyway I could not afford it).

I play a SSB at my teachers and much as I like it I do think that the S6 compares fovaourably. I also have a friend with a similar size fairly new Bosendorfer (not sure of the model) but I have to say that I do not like it. If it were mine I would bring in the technician and have it voiced and regulated. At present it sounds rather harsh and the action is not quite precise enough which surprised me. To be honest, I preferred my Boston.

I will now await the tuner and let the new instrument settle down and then let you know what I think in a month or two.

Best wishes to all.

A Yamaha short upright piano model 'MJ3'. You guys probably haven't heard it before coz this is a very old model. It is not working well since it is old and gonna be 30 years old next year :o

Currently choosing a new upright piano although I have enough budget to buy a grand(I live in Hong Kong and people here don't have space in their flat to place a grand).......
It is quite important for me to buy a better piano since the piano i am using now can't improve my skill and i am having dipABRSM exam at the end of the year...

Heh got a new Kawai RX-3 recently ;D

I still have my old Yamaha G1, and the comparison is so contrasting. Sounds much much sweeter and mellower, yet more cantabile. Stiffer action, but then the Yamaha's is a pushover [then again, it is 25 years old]. And the bass sounds like a cannon, despite the size. More character than the tin pistol sound produced by a brand new Yamaha C6 I tried.

I have a Kawai KG-2D with a beautiful warm sound and a Yamaha Clavinova CVP-94. I am living overseas now and miss my pianos so much! :'(  I am still looking for a rental upright at this moment.
