Love him or hate him, I say that if someone learns something, no matter what the method of teaching may be, then someone has learned something and mission accomplished.

Where is the option for "who cares?"

In any case, I voted for option 4.  8)

If Lang Lang is giving master classes, it's in how to effect all kinds of distracting mannerisms at the piano so that the audience will focus on those antics rather than the music itself.  His opening seminar topic is "How to avoid economy of motion at the piano at all costs."
Interpreting music means exploring the promise of the potential of possibilities.

Lang Lang does have some musicality, he just chooses not to use it. Why be musical when you can be popular?

little ming, you need to move your arms more like a chicken, just like how i play, just like the masters.
Bach - Partita No.2
Scriabin - Etude 8/12
Debussy - L'isle Joyeuse
Liszt - Un Sospiro

Goal:
Prokofiev - Toccata

I think he rocks. It's true, he adds some circus to the show, but the truth is that if part of the audience get distracted by those, then they wouldn't be able to appreciate his performance even if he'd be frozen. In other words, audiences mostly suck  ;D

Economy of motion is a tool to get performance results, not a goal on itself, except for those 'live statues' you see on street. I really enjoy watching him play with such a freedom and still being able to play better than most 'protocolar' pianists.

oh, he's got a lot better on the physical side these days. Don't you think so? hardly any trace of chicken wings any more...  ;D

Onec I randomly come across an interview of him. He talked about him and Barenboim sitting down and watching the Carnegie Hall video together and laughed at himself, and he mimicked some of his 'mannerism" in the video on that interview. From that moment on, he's a "plus figure" in my head.

I think this thread should descend into a caption competition for that wonderful picture. Leonidas and invictious have made a great start. As soon as I have something good, I'll post.

For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)
