"The future is not embodied in dissonant chords or in strange sources of sound. The future is in ideas that have yet to be understood and implemented."
Asked if he had ever conducted any Stockhausen,Sir Thomas Beecham replied, "No, but I once trod in some."

Wow that is awesome.  Seems like many composers after Beethoven missed that one.  The wonderful thing about Beethoven was that his music really was all about ideas.  He could take nothing but a tonic and dominant chord and make them sound like the most profound thing you've ever heard.

I just listened to the ninth. Again. And was blown away. Again. Only the first two movements, then the neighbours nocked on my wall, as I had the volume way too high. Guess it blew them away too.

Indeed, a very nice quote. And given how many pieces of new music - I mean, really brand new - I've heard recently with tunes in them I think more than a handful of composers are starting to realise that too! Plenty still writing plinky-plonk, of course....

I like your positive outlook - I too have heard a lot of promising new music lately.

Pretty weak quote imo.
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)
