The art of shaving for men.
on: December 02, 2007, 11:07:59 AM
After many years of shaving and watching other men get it completly wrong to the point of self harm,i feel it is my duty to share my knowledge with other men, especially with those young men who will start shaving soon. 8)

Step  - 1  Do not wash your face if the face is only greasy.

2  Wet your face with warm or hot water if you are brave.

3  Apply Gillette (prefrably) gel with your finger tips on your face, spreading evenly and generously.

4  Rinse you Gillette (prefrably) blade under hot tap water, this blade must have at the very least 2 blades, however 3 blades would be better.

5  It is very important that you either stand infront of a mirror or you have a mirror in hand so that you can see your face.

6  Start shaving in one direction, the best direction is the downward direction, never change this direction because if you do it will effect your facial hair gradually, and you will most likely cut your lip or nose in the process.

7  never shave in a rush, take your time and be gentle

8  Once you are done shaving check in the mirror to see if you have missed any unshaven parts.

9 Wash face with cold or if you are brave with very cold water and soap.

10  DO NOT dry you face ,allow your face to dry by air.

11    Apply shaving Balm to your face once dry using the palm of your hand, gently massaging the balm on you face to protect and care for your skin.

12  Finaly you may choose to apply after shave to your face, spread evenly and not too much.

This is a truly  good way to have a shave and i hope it will save any futur complecations amongs the young generation of men. 8)

The BEST time to shave is straight after being in a steam room or sauna. THE BEST!

I have yet to start shaving. Hopefully my face will stay soft and hairless like a baby's bottom...

I once had to use a womans razor, it had a flexible head and was one of the worst shaves I've experienced.  The other was in a gas station using a single-blade razor which gave me slight bacon-face.

Zheer:  why not dry the face?  and what good does after shave do anyways?

Another tip: if you want to be extra-smooth, after shaving with the grain, go against the grain....  and your chin will shine.  CAREFULLY! or that shine will be glistening blood

But then you won't be able to stroke your beard when you want to look profound.  Nobody will take you seriously.

There are a few on this forum I'd like to send to Sweeney Todd for their "shave". Anyway, zheer, your method sounds suspiciously like advice from the "fab five" except for the product line of course - Gillette, never, too inexpensive. Personally I've always shaved in the opposite direction of my beard growth, never used balm of any kind--as a matter of fact I think I've broken every one of your rules--and I can still "pass for 40 at dusk with the light behind me".

If one uses a beard trimmer on a regular basis as I do, there is rarely any beard to stroke in order to "look profound", unless one has forgotten to use it for a while...

I shave half way through my shower.

I wash my face with facewash, apply shaving gel, shave the face, I tend to go against the grain on my neck and chin after going with the grain, I wash the face again with face wash.

I'm usually to tired to shave. So I shave about 3 times a week and sometimes look a bit scruffy.

NEVER go against the grain! You risk getting ingrown hairs!  :o They hurt and sometimes take months to clear.

Because you skin has a new layer of skin which is sensative,an air dry will leave you skin smooth and ready for a after shave balm or cream. The aftershave is a good way to protect you skin from an infection especially if you have cut yourself. ;)

Yes, i started shaving at 14/15, but luckly am not a hairy guy,so my facial and body hair has remaind the same since 18.Unlike a lot of my uncles who have hairy back, neck and seriously thick stuble. But yeah you are wright most middle easten men are hairy and according to a lot of women, sort of ugly. ::)

Shave in the shower, last thing.
Learn to shave without a mirror; you can do it if you set your mind to it, think, man! Ray Charles could shave. This is a great help: use your mind; visualize what is happening to guide your hand and discover a miracle. As afraid as I am of anything sharp, I am still amazed at this.
Use high-quality gel and a high-quality razor; forget the disposables. The expensive Gillette blades will last a long time and not only will it cost less, but be more effective and comfortable.
Shave against the grain; bear down a little (not too much); check your work often.
If dressing for dinner or going out, you will have to shave again, possibly as soon as early afternoon.
Now, be amazed.

Real men shave with petrol and a cig lighter.

Being a big girl's blouse myself, I prefer a Remington electric. It's crap and takes ages, but I can read while I shave!

Shave against the grain; bear down a little (not too much); check your work often.

NO! WRONG, WRONG, WRONG! People will keep promoting this NONSENSE until they suffer an ingrown hair  ::)

SHAVE WITH THE GRAIN! You have been warned.

https://mensfashion.about.com/od/groomingface/a/ingrownhairs.htm

3. Adjust your shaving technique

Shaving too closely is one of the triggers for razor bumps. Hair stubs cut too closely will get trapped inside the hair follicle and dig inward or sideways. Don't worry, the disappearance of unsightly ingrown hairs will more than make up for the "five-o'clock shadow" appearance.

To avoid shaving too close, don't pull the skin when you shave; don't put too much pressure on the blades; shave with the grain and use a single-blade razor.

You will need to maintain this approach over time, as one extra-close shave will be enough to cause a recurrence of ingrown hairs that will take weeks to heal.

Why don't you all just wax your beards off, it's a lot simpler (though probably more painful, but you get sued to it) and you wont have to do it as often.

Waxing is for girls and sissys(  ;

God no. No man actually wants a face as smooth as a babies bottom. We like to feel gruff sometimes. We like to admire or masuline features, of which facial hair is a distinguishing one.

A beard also acts a bit like communication device. When i have not shaved for ages my friends can tell im not in a great mood and im feeling tired or rough.

If given the option between being run-over by a train or wax the beard off,i would choose being run-over by a train it would be less painful. :(

Or else do what my mate Greg must do (I assume) - shave with clippers set to about Number One for that '5 days' stubble' look every day. He must be doing something right as his girlfriend is one of the prettiest ladies I've seen in a long time and a very talented musician too.

Here is my shaving ritual for anyone who's interested:
1) select least rusty razor from old-razor cup in bathroom
2) blindly hack, scratch and swipe away
3) always miss those stupid ****ing bits by the jaw
4) apply toilet paper where needed.

Having said that, I have gone through an incredibly lazy patch recently, and haven't shaved in over   2 weeks. Does anyone else take an almost masochistic pleasure from seeing how revolting they can look? The girlfriend has given me a week to get a shave and a haircut, but I'm still reluctant...

haha, onlookers think I'm deep in thought, when really my mind is completely absent - I might be watching a piece of garbage blowing in the wind which is exactly what's going on in my head.

I play trombone and the skin around my lips is part of my equipment.

There is no way I'm letting sharp knives near my facial skin.  Those tiny nicks and cuts, too small to even bleed, add up over time.

I use an electric, one of the triple header brands.  I have the kind that squirts gel when you push a button but I've used other brands too.  Under the jaw I can get a closer shave with an electric than a blade without irritating the skin.  Yes, I can use mine in the shower but that doesn't mesh with my morning routine.
