Music College UK
on: April 19, 2004, 01:37:32 AM
I'm looking to go on to music college somewhere in the UK, preferably in England or Wales. I prefer doing practical stuff, and would ideally like to spend 4 years playing piano.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Mike

I have also heard that there is a good Programme with the  Northern College of Music (or something like that), and the Manchester University. I believe York also has a good music programme.

If you thinking to go outside of Britain, Amsterdam has the Sweelinck Conservatory (Conservatorium van Amsterdam), which is quite good; it's also not very expensive, and has good teachers. If you want more prestige, you have Paris and Vienna. Hannover has a good Musikschule (Arie Vardi teaches there and he's a brilliant teacher), and there's the Hans Eisler Hochschule fuer Music in Berlin....

anybody know of others?

Cheers, I probably won't be outside the UK, although I may spent some time abroad - who knows?!

I've been looking at Birmingham, Cardiff, Royal college, Royal Northen, Trinity, Royal Acadamy. Of course the other important thing apart from the college itself is the city. Anyone know what it's like to live in Birmingham? Cardiff, Manchester, London?

I've nnever lived in England, but I can tell you what I've heard from other people. Birmingham is a shithole to live in, not very interesting even though it's so big. (Anyone from Birmingham, I'm sorry - that's just what I've heard, I'm open to hear other opinions) London is where I want to go because it's big and has everything to offer. My parents lived in London in the early 80's, it's probably changed, but it's still a big centre of happenings - and it's kinda close to home for me (both Israel and Holland). Manchester is a middle-class, blue-collar industrial city, from what I've heard...

My apologies to anyone offended by my generalisations of life in British cities - they're just based on what I've heard from different sources.

This is my second year living in London now and I couldn't imagine a more exciting place to live in... The cultural life is amazing, and the diversity of peope you can meet here is fantastic too... I don't think I could live somewhere else now that I've experienced living in London! The big problem is that everything here (rents in particular) is outrageously expensive.

Well if you want london, aside from those already mentioned i can only recommend Goldsmiths, i'll be going there next year and it looks an amazing place in a relatively cheap area of town.  Its less classically oriented than others but it does offer classical, and its filled with students of all the arts so you'll meet really cool people, including possibly me, lol.
