Left hand octaves
on: December 28, 2007, 12:01:03 AM
I wonder if other people also do this - when executing left hand octaves, I tend to only play the lower note (with pinky), with the upper note mute, although the thumb is in position. Anyone?

If anything, the lower note loses its sound. Although, in RH sixths and octaves, sometimes the thumb drops out. I just need to slow down and make sure my weight's in it.

For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert. (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

When I was in my teens (a very long time ago), I remember having my
fifth
finger not sound occasionally in octave playing. At any rate, try playing the octaves slower and with a gripping action. Then gradually increase their speed. That seems to work for many of my students.
