Pieces for a returning student
on: December 28, 2007, 07:58:52 PM
Hey,

It has been about 6 or 7 years since I have touched the piano to play or learn any music. I've been playing for many years before then and managed to complete grade 8. I have not any pieces I can play at all now - I can make a fairly useless attempt at fur elise from memory but thats it! Isn't it shameful?  :'( All the pieces I learned while doing the grades I really dislike, they are boring classical pieces which is why I gave up practicing them.

I would like to get back into playing the piano for myself (rather than just getting a grade) and build up a retitoire. I had a quick go of impromptu fantasie and got off the first line and a half - it felt fantastic to play something so nice, but my poor hands are in bits and I can safely say I'll stack it on the shelf for a rainy day in the far future. Learning nice pieces is one of my motivations to restart playing. I refuse to learn another difficult boring piece of music!

Would anyone have a repretoire of music, maybe something easyish going to more difficult to get me back into the swing of things and build up some nice pieces?

Thanks!

Stick with shorter pieces if you're worried about a difficult learning curve... perhaps a Chopin waltz.  Mozart sonatas are also a light way to go, although performing them well is, in fact, quite difficult. Good luck.
